Big Silver / Sterling Boy Scouts Ring / Skeleton Key & Others

Well-known member
Finds are from a few weekend hunts since my last post. Most all of the finds were pulled at public sites in North Dakota and one Saturday hunt coming from Minnesota.
The horseshoes came from an old field site close to my parent's farm.
My XP Deus 2 was used just about all the time and my Manticore was used shortly on one site.
The 1942 half came from an old ND fairgrounds. The '83 Indian, 1901 V and a few others came there also.
The silver boy scouts ring came out of MN and was about 10 inches. It read just like a silver quarter and was happy to get that instead.
The cash register stick pin is circa 1900. This came from a local old school only about 6 miles from home.
I also pulled a 1918 merc and a few others from that Sunday evening hunt.
Thanks for looking!
Dave

Other Finds
1950 sterling boy scouts' ring & couple other misc. rings.
Skeleton key (center of group shot)
National cash register stick pin (circa 1900)
Fluor tool tag (Fluor company was founded in 1911)
Older flat style lighter
Misc buttons and a couple 'New Club' shotgun head stamps which are very old. The one button appears to be an older navy button. I have found a few of those in the past.
Couple old printing plates. The top one I believe is from an old flooring company. Not sure what the other one is. Maybe a horse saddle? Ideas welcome.
Sleigh bell with 1878 patent date.
Thimble
Misc. buckles and escutcheons

Some nice finds you got there Dave. Those halves are hard to come by anymore, but those that know there detectors are getting the one many walk over as there is iron around them or other trash.
Still some great finds out there just got to swing the coil over them and know what your detector is telling you, so you are understanding the detector you use well.

The 1911 V nickel looks like it was buried with another coin. Was it the1894 Indian ?

thanks Rick!
yes, that walker was surrounded by junk and iron. It gave me a 97 number on my D2 so I was hoping for a half and it was.
I also have wireless Grey Ghost headphones with the D2 headphone control unit plugged into it which helps hear those deep faint signals.

No, the 1911 V nickel was not with another coin. It was pulled at an old fairgrounds. I pulled a couple old crusty nickels out of there last year.
The 1883 Indian and 1942 walker were pulled about 50 feet away from the nickel.
The 1894 Indian was pulled at a different old school site.

You don't post often Dave but when I see one from you I know its going to be good. Outstanding group of finds as usual and a hearty attaboy for the effort. One area I lack is research so feel free to share if you will. You seem to have transitioned from the Etrac to the D ll seamlessly and continually find the deeper targets. Wish you the same success with the Manticore. Good luck.

Thanks Mark.
As far as research, of course I use google maps, plat books, historic map works, historic aerial programs, Sanborn fire insurance maps, image searches etc. and do a lot of cross referencing to find public sites that I feel are still promising.
Most of the time before hunting on a weekend day trip, I will plan out my site list stops so I have a general game plan for the day and make the most of my time.
I have often re-researched previously hunted sites and have found more details that made me revisit the site and start in a different area which led to more finds.
When you have been public site hunting seriously for as long as I have, you pick up on patterns, amount of junk in the ground, etc. which can give you a sense if you can get more old targets out of a site.
I have alot of patience and exercise is my main motivation so I will stick with it along time as one find can change your entire day.
The Deus 2 is such a great machine and has allowed me to re-hit the super junky sites I have been to many times with the Etrac.
