Does anyone here remember a guy named VA beach Max, or grave digger Max from another forum ??

Mark ( ohio )

Well-known member
Here's why I'm asking. He use to have a sort of a hook contraption he'd wear around his waist to hook the heavy scoop to and just drag the handle thru the sand till he needed it.. My problem was this, I brought 2 scoops with me on the obx trip. One was a heavy duty NUTTALL thats has to weigh 5 pounds easy and the other a long handle sifter that should really be just for dry sand hunting. I never had the right scoop it seemed, one day in the low tide area targets were popping, but had the dry sifter that worked like a piece of sheet. The day I brought the NUTTALL , not a single beep.

I'm not going to invest in a carbon fiber handle and titanium scoop set-up for a 1 time hunt every yr. I'd like to know about that hook set-up he had.

Anybody ?? Mark ( ohio )

I know who you are referring to and may run into him next week.
I’ll be down his way next week to try my luck.
He still detects, but is not on the forum anymore.
I hope you do run into him Felix.. ask him about the hook he used on his belt. We used to converse back and forth many yrs ago, but haven't since the other forum disbanded some time ago. Mention Mark from ( ohio ), maybe he'd remember me ?

Here ya go Mark. This is a video that Joe Beechnut / OBN filmed 16 years ago when he was hunting with VA Beach Max. Fast forward to 2:09 and you'll see VA Max's hook setup on his right hip all throughout the rest of the video. To my eyes,, looks like he probably got a U hook from Home Depot or Lowes, riveted it onto a hard plate, then may have riveted that hard plate onto some type of flexible material so that he could cut rectangular holes for his belt to go through.

Here's another one Mark from 9 years ago, so better video clarity. Fast forward to 9:43 and pause. You'll get a clear look at the hook setup. Looks like a smaller hook than the one in the previous video, so may have change design a bit.

RTG aluminum scoop with truck bed liner spray on paint on the handle. What I found amazing (in addition to the added grip to the handle from the bed liner spray) is that in spite of it being black, the handle did not get as hot in the sun with it sprayed as the bare aluminum does. To this day, if I fly on a beach trip, an RTG travel scoop with a sprayed handle is the scoop that gets packed.

I agree tvr, here's mine.

I used Plasti Dip black on my RTG scoop about 14 years ago, before I had heard of anyone else spraying their scoops handle. I also used black Plasti Dip on the bottom of my Sovereign's SEF coils and just sprayed the bottom of my 12" Spider Coil on my Dual Field PI. BTW, my RTG scoop is aluminum with a Stainless-Steel Lip. I flush it with freshwater after every hunt and it's held up great for 14 years so far, no dents, dings, welds are solid, still works great.
