My FIRST nickle and my FIRST dime today!

Finds in 30 minutes today included 2 nails, 2 pennies (1999 and 1986), a 3.7 oz fishing weight, and an old radiator cap.

    Search-Dig sequence?

    Probably.

    Search-Dig sequence?

I'm still pretty new to detecting and have found a sequence for search-dig that I'd like your feed back on. I glued little flags to some 1/16 inch diameter, foot long, steel rods and when I go out detecting, I concentrate first on just detecting and I carry only my detector and the flags. When...

My FIRST nickle and my FIRST dime today!

Here's the stuff I dug today. I think the large curved metal thing might be part of a scythe for harvesting crops? It was found at 8 inches and was a bugger to dig out!

My FIRST nickle and my FIRST dime today!

I was there before and during the house move so I've got a pretty good idea where the doors were. Thanks. There's also an old stone well (still standing) near the back kitchen door. That might be a good spot to investigate. Found two pennies (both 80's), a brass key, and something at 8...

My FIRST nickle and my FIRST dime today!

Being so new at this I guess I wasn't aware how rare these Merc dimes are. In seven visits to the site I've found 9 pennies, 1 nickel, and the dime plus a lot of junk, and there is another 2 acres to go. I'm pretty sure this old farmhouse site has never been hunted before and I always find...

    Detector questions

I use a Garrett ACE 300 and I'm still pretty new to this fascinating hobby. I was wondering how many detectorists actually use the wide velcro strap that goes around the fore arm on the back end your detector? I can't see that it really helps much with control, and working your arm through the...

My FIRST nickle and my FIRST dime today!

Dug 4 plugs today and found some old fence wire, 2 screws, a Lincoln penny (1963), a Jefferson nickle (1995), and a Liberty head dime (1917). All three coins were within 6 feet of each other and I was surprised at how much less corrosion there was on the dime and how well it washed up.

    My first ever brass today.

The farmhouse was built in 1889 (by the first Mayor of our town) and I know he ran a dairy herd for several years so perhaps his family sold butter and cheese.

    My first ever brass today.

The weather has warmed up to 46 today so I did a little dirt surfing at my favorite old farmhouse site. The 3rd hole provided my first ever brass piece. It looks to be an old thermometer and has stamped writing on it that includes temperatures for: Freezing (32 degrees), Churning (62...

    What is it?

Working the area around an old farmhouse (built in 1889 but since removed) I dug this up. It looks like maybe an iron wheel off an old 20's or30's toy truck? It's about 3 inches in diameter. Any suggestions? Should I try to clean it up more?

    At home metallurgical tests?

I'm still really new to metal detecting (I've only been out 4 times since Christmas) and was wondering what kinds of metallurgical testing can be done at home to determine if a heavily corroded piece of metal is brass, silver, copper, lead, gold, etc. Thanks,

    Garrett Newbie Here

Thanks for the input! I'm still learning the sounds of coins vs. trash. The main reason I'm considering extending the dig at that one hole is that it is located right about where the front porch on the farmhouse was, and the grandson of the previous house owner told me his grandfather didn't...

    Garrett Newbie Here

Good morning. This is my first post. I am brand new to the sport and have recently purchased a Garrett ACE 300 "kit" to include the detector, pin pointer, coil cover, etc. I am really enjoying the hobby and enjoy the ease of use of the Model 300. I live on an island off the coast of...
