This was found in the mountains of North Alabama in some rocks, not buried. Any ideas?

I've had it for about 30 years the man that found it was in his 90s and had went back to his boyhood home which was at the foot of the mountain and while there he decided to walk up the mountain behind the home and that's when he discovered this item but he also found what he said looked like acorn shaped objects that were also heavy for their size which makes me wonder could that have been what they intended to melt down. I believe what ever it is or was to be used for it is pretty old and may date back maybe before the Civil War. I can't help but wonder who and how did someone make it and it end up where it was.

It would interesting if you could go back to the area if you know where it is and can access it…
Hard to tell what else could be there.
I agree with you of it possibly being pre civil war area.
Was the old man metal detecting when he found it?
That is quite the intriguing find!
