That M9 is a fine coil on the Manticore.----Nipping at the heels of the M11 for depth--very close.----Only about 1 inch difference between those two coils in my soil.
You nailed it perfectly. It reminds me so much of the performance of the 8x6 sef but even deeper. If you could only own one coil, this would be my choice. JJ

This is very true. I haven’t tested it, but I think that the M8 would be the best if you’re interested in detecting chains and the same thing goes with most detectors, you can have a gram of solid gold and they hit hard, but if you’re talking about a gram of flower gold, it doesn’t work. There’s something about the way the residual electromagnetic field of the individual pieces doesn’t develop as strongly after your coil hits it like it does with a solid piece and the detector can’t sense that as easily, but a smaller coil is more sensitive to them. I made a huge mistake once with a SDC 2300. I called the dealer I got it from and told him it doesn’t work because I can put a sample of gold under the coil and it wouldn’t pick it up. It was about a half gram of crumbly gold. He told me to just take one of the crumbs from the bottle and just test it by itself and the detector slammed on it. Then he said now put it back in the bottle with the rest and try it again. Boy, was I humbled by that experiment!
Moreland's book Inside the Metal Detector, describes in detail your observation and so much more as to why individual links in a chain, for example, don't add up to a bigger target response than the individual links. Those dang Eddy currents. Regarding coil size and targets detected, I'm having second thoughts about the use of a smaller coil for smaller gold after doing an experiment described elsewhere. But here is the Tables and easy to figure why I have second thoughts. Tables show detection depth for 3 different weight chains for 4 different coils. Top Table is detecting chain only (no clasp, size in paranthesis) and bottom Table is when claw clasp was included in the detection field. On the beach, I think I'll primarily use my M15!
