    Yes, they did put these coins on sewing baskets - from what I read they were popular in the USA during the 1930's - 1950's era. These old Chinese coins had no value years ago so they started using them as decorations. Here's a photo.

    Looks like a Chinese coin from here - but I could be wrong. Here's a link to a site that I used to date a few of the 1800's Chinese coins that I've found. This site or one like it (do a Google search for similar sites) should give you the date (minting time span in years) of your coin...
