Another brass/bronze decorative piece(s) from near the War of 1812 tavern site - found this yesterday

Thank you so much, Steve! I don't know how you did that so quickly, just flabbergasted! I will look carefully to see if I can figure out whether it is the tomahawk-bearing candle holder or the rifle-toting Powhatan. Will report back to you soon with my best guess.

Unbelievable! I don't know how you do it, Steve! That is just amazing!

I agree, and I really geek out on the historical maps, aerial photograph and historical accounts. It's just such a fun hobby, and it's also gotten me out into the deep woods off-trail appreciating and learning about nature much more, thinking about how challenging life was for people back then...

Very cool, and researching/finding out what the heck they are is equally (or almost equally) rewarding as the thrill of detecting them and digging them up :ROFLMAO:

Another brass/bronze decorative piece(s) from near the War of 1812 tavern site - found this yesterday

Thanks, Steve! That croc and porcupine button is definitely a great example. Like you mentioned, those plumed feathers jogged my memory. I've been googling around a bit too for brass/bronze items but still haven't found a match yet - thanks for looking around too! Next time I go back to my...

Another brass/bronze decorative piece(s) from near the War of 1812 tavern site - found this yesterday

Thanks, Steve. You are absolutely right on target in your line of thinking. So, just about 15 minutes ago I found this old litho from circa 1870: https://www.loc.gov/item/95507872/ and the similarities to my brass/bronze piece are striking, right down to the bottom fringes of his cloak, the...

Another brass/bronze decorative piece(s) from near the War of 1812 tavern site - found this yesterday

Hi all, For a long time, I've been wanting to approach the people who own some private property just north of the public property (woods) War of 1812 era tavern site that I've posted a few finds from earlier. Finally found a contact number, met with some wonderful folks who were thrilled to...

Lead "handle" (???) with threaded iron core from 1812-era tavern site

LOL :ROFLMAO: it's a little auger that I can't figure out. I'll have to post it sometime soon. Kind of looks like a petcock that could be turned by thumb and forefinger. Don't know if it's maybe a carpentry tool for boring peg holes for dowels to fit into furniture.... why they would use...

Lead "handle" (???) with threaded iron core from 1812-era tavern site

Thanks for your thoughts, Steve! I'd agree also that the lead priest (sounds like a heavy metal band) is probably our best bet so far. As far as trout streams nearby the site, there is a creek within about 1.5 miles that is stocked yearly with trout by the state, so I wouldn't doubt at all that...

Lead "handle" (???) with threaded iron core from 1812-era tavern site

Thanks for all the great ideas Taxidea, Steve, and fyrffytr1... wow, I haven't checked in to the website in a few days and there are lots of great responses. I'd say that any of these ideas are plausible, and good hunches. Maybe an iron bolt connected the wood to the lead on this. The lead...

Lead "handle" (???) with threaded iron core from 1812-era tavern site

Good point, thanks, HuntinDog. I'll definitely have to think down that path, too. I'm still perplexed. I was almost thinking some kind of fishing net sinkers, but haven't seen any that look like this and have an iron insert with a threaded hole.

Lead "handle" (???) with threaded iron core from 1812-era tavern site

Very possibly any of the above, Steve. Really makes me wonder, but as with many of these 'whatzits' we find, we unfortunately may never know. If there was an eye bolt attached, the threaded hole goes down into the body of the lead weight about 95% of its length, so it would've been embedded...

Lead "handle" (???) with threaded iron core from 1812-era tavern site

Thanks, Steve! Hmmm... I gave that idea some serious consideration, and it sure looks a lot like one, but I just can't fathom why the central iron cylindrical "core" would be present and threaded with a kind of crude-looking and wide spiral threading to a depth of about one wooden toothpick...

Lead "handle" (???) with threaded iron core from 1812-era tavern site

Hi everyone, I found this ~3" long unidentified pendulum-shaped or handle-shaped lead object about 100 feet from the site of a long-gone tavern from the War of 1812 that I've been working and have posted on before. It was about 10" deep and definitely has that old-time white lead patina that...

Not at all, Ronstar, happy that you chimed in and it definitely was on topic :-) Thanks for the welcome!

    Equinox single frequencies.

Good info, bootyhound, I will have to try 5khz on my War of 1812 tavern site, which sounds similar to your site but maybe not quite as much trash... plenty of small iron and nails though, and as you said, the multifreq can hit hard on that iron and make it sound great. I've been using mainly...

Thick cast brass finial & decorative work near 1812 tavern site - date/Early US design style??

Beauties for sure! The liberty cap (and pole) origins are amazing. There are a lot of allegorical figures on the paper money, too, although I'm less familiar with it, such as these: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Educational_Series. BTW, I've always been a fan of Canadian coinage, many...

Thick cast brass finial & decorative work near 1812 tavern site - date/Early US design style??

Glad that you took those Art History classes... I think it will be very practical when applied to this type of amateur archaeological setting and some of your finds, because knowledge of those motifs can really help to narrow down a date range for those artifacts. Always interesting to think...
