    I have a 5” cz coil for sale. It came with a detector i purchased. The previous owner had replaced the coil wire covering with an automotive wire cover and zip tie.     I would say no air gap for me . I tend to be as close to the ground as possible. touching the grass or dirt through out the swing. and definitely on the ground while working a suspect, target.

    exactly right, If you can slow down and work the target , a repeatable signal is what you want. sometimes the questionable signals hold good targets. Yes the meter starts jumping back and forth is another indicator to slow down and work the target. All in all the Audio to me is king ...
