    Excal coil cable choice?

I'm curious if anyone has experimented with different coil cable choices. Perhaps one with twisted pair RX and TX pairs both shielded. Could use USB3.0 cable material with low capacitance insulation. Much lighter than the cables used now on coils.

    End Cap connector choices

I've seen the excellent work OBN and others have done with mods and endcap work. I have this kit of parts to eventually build an Excal. The endcaps look like they may have cracks. I am torn between using female M12 inline receptacles embedded in the endcap vs using black plastic Heyco's here...

    Excal pc board identification

There are several varieties of Excal and I haven't been able to find something that identifies board rev's with each version of Excal. A sticker does not an Excal II make...

    Excalibur supply voltage range?

Has anyone done any work characterizing Excal performance vs battery voltage? I've read some threads that give a pretty broad voltage range for the unit. I'm wondering where things start to get flakey (low voltage) and on the other end, if higher voltage increases depth range any. I'm also...

Repair of broken mounting tangs on 11" coil?

I will be receiving an 11" coil with the shaft mount tangs broken off. Any idea on the best way to fix it? Is there a special type of plastic to use and/or glue? I won't be getting the broken off pieces.

    Sent Messages listing

I've noticed that the Sent Messages listing in the Personal Messaging area does not seem to list my replies to personal messages from others. I want to go back and verify these messages were sent as sometimes I am right about to hit the Send button and sometimes I do sometimes I forget if I did...

Hitting the park with the CTX

The local SoCal beaches have been boring for me so I thought I'd try something completely different and hit Irvine Park. I've never hunted there before and don't hunt parks much. There is one just 600 feet up the street but only 30 years old or so and targets are mostly chewed up by the lawn...

    17" Coil = trouble

Yesterday I hunted Huntington Beach with my friend Jim and used my CTX with 11" coil. Found nothing special; no targets in the wet, a few in the sand. Today was a nice day so we met at Aliso. He had his new CTX to tryout and I had my 3+ year old one. Since no targets yesterday, I decided to...

    Volume Gain Setting

I wonder how many of you have played with the Volume Gain setting. If you have it set high, everything, even an aluminum or cast metal nugget the size of two grains of rice will sound pretty loud. Then you hit a coin at 3" and blow your ears off. But if you have the Gain set too low you might...

    Old vx New

A friend of mine just received a new CTX-3030 and we met at the beach. He had been using his for awhile before I got there. I decided to quickly compare the two doing a few simple things. First we both ran Auto Noise Cancel - his came up with a 3 and mine came up with a 10. We both repeated...

U30 headphones - really that bad?

I've read several people trash the U30 headphones but for most (dry) hunting are they really that bad? The frequency response profile looks to be reasonable. I understand how annoying the ear-cup swiveling gets - the phones tend to fall off my head when I move around digging etc. Also the wiring...

    Coating for carbon shaft?

Sand gets between my CTX shaft lock and the shaft and wears down the shaft diameter. I clean the detector after each trip but don't take the shaft out normally to clean. The lock is getting weak due to the thinner shaft. What should I coat the shaft with to build up the thickness so the lock...

CTX Coil Location When Pinpoint Enabled Makes a Difference

I have found pinpoint to be a pain with the CTX and decided to look into it a bit. I sat a quarter down on the street and tried some things. My pinpoint lock is enabled so I can use the trigger button to start/stop pinpoint. Sizing is enabled. Detector is in Beach mode. 1. Normal mode sweep...

Anyone have a damaged CTX coil for cheap?

Hi, I'm curious to see if I were to obtain a damaged CTX coil if I could substitute a home-made coil (perhaps BigFoot style) for it using the original coil's IC. So if you have one and will let it go really cheap I'd be interested. Or if someone's already tried this how did it work out?

    Solar Panel for CTX/WM10 charger?

Hi all, Curious if many of you would consider a solar panel interface to the CTX/WM10 charger a worthwhile expenditure if it were to be in the $125+ price range. Might be something I could work on. Perhaps it is just a rare need and your car is a fine remote supply? Or maybe you have one...

    Target ID's and WM10

I recently started using my WM10 with iphone earbuds to get away from headphones. I notice right away the target ID's seem to differ from those of the headphone era. Is it just a time of year thing (I hunt the wet sand of southern CA beaches)? In addition I'm not hitting as many bottlecaps. I...

    CTX control box cable issue

I backed off my control unit to switch to a different coil and discovered the control unit cable insulation was damaged by being pinched by the enclosure. It still works ok but it is compromised and will draw in water. Just a matter of time before the wires fail. FYI this was the first time I...

    Bad CTX/coil wanted

I'd like to take apart a bad CTX coil to see if I can understand the chip technology used so perhaps I could make my own later on. Maybe you have a coil or complete CTX that was burned in a fire, squashed by a car, that kind of thing that Minelab warranty repair won't cover? Or if you know of...

CTX bobby pins and bottle caps

I've had my CTX over a year now. I bought it used and had to send it back to Minelab soon after I got it as I discovered the GPS didn't lock very often. They fixed it and things were good until this summer. I search the same 1 mile stretch of CA beach area (Aliso to Montage). I had used a...

Confused about Iron Wraparound disc setting

I have Andy's book and am confused by pages 74 and 75 in regards to iron wrap around. Why does the area A page 74 being white allow for wrap around? He says blacking out the upper two lines will prevent it. On page 75 he says it shows a beach pattern but changes need to be made. Again he says...
