    Broke my silver drought today..

Of course that's the about the only kind of drought we've had around here in the past month. It's been raining probably 3 days out of 5 the last 3 weeks, and cloudy 4 out of 5. I got thinking today about how detecting is supposed to be a bit more productive after a good rain, due to soil...

    New York state militia button

Actually found this more than a month ago, but couldn't figure out what it was until now due to the poor condition. The only way I was able to figure out was from narrowing down the letters to being the end of "excelsior", the new york state motto. It's had a pretty rough life, but I believe...

    More with the 6x8 SEF

Got out a bit more with this coil. Got a nice gilt button yesterday and a cufflink. The button is from Benedict & Burnham, of Waterbury, Connecticut. Apparently circa 1834-1843 with that backmark, going from some info I found on the net. Don't know who made the cufflink, but it looks old too...

Got out with the 6x8 SEF today.

Wish I had some pictures to post, but my camera battery is charging. Got a nice gilt button with most of the gilt still on it. made by benedict & burnham, apparently c. 1830's-1840's. It was directly underneath a large rusty nail and gave me a mixed tone. Also managed an1863 fatty indian...

Went and got myself a new machine..and it's even better than the explorer!

Who needs 28 frequencies when you've got 1? I bet this thing will run circles around my SE any old day. (in all seriousness, this is my first machine I got when I was 5 or 6 from radio shack, Found it while cleaning out some of my junk from the parents house) Now if I could just attach my X1...

Neat story, and good PR for the hobby

One of the places I've hunted a good bit over the last few years is a lawn of an old early 1800's house that was converted into the professional building. The dentist I go to owns it and has his office there, which is how I got permission. It's produced a lot of newer coins (and an unimaginable...

Seeing as people are posting pictures of their trash vs finds...

I figured I'd share mine for the last week. This is all from 1 site in 4 hunts or so since last weekend, and using the SEF 10x12. And this doesn't count a few of the 1 pound plus pieces of iron still sitting out at the site since they wouldn't fit in my pouch. In case anybody's wondering how...

Pictures of large cent, flying eagle and indians, plus relics

Ok, here's the pictures as promised. Didn't bother with any of the wheats. I think that buckle could be a rather old one, the house dates back to the early 1700's. The items with the slots are two broken pieces of a harmonica reed, I think. The token is a missouri sales tax token. Apparently mid...

A bit more on my experience with the SEF 10x12 vs. iron

I took the SEF out for another spin on sunday at the same site I'd pulled the large cent, flying eagle, etc from. This time I started doing a grid at 90 degrees from what I'd done a couple days before. Managed 2 more wheats, an 1881 indian, and a few other odds and ends. At least a couple of the...

Revisiting the topic of small coils for REALLY trasy areas.

As I mentioned in my prior post, the SEF is not quite up to the task in SUPER trashy areas (such as the nail zone right around the walls of old houses). It is, however, just fine in slightly lower trash areas. The contenders I'm thinking of for a good high-trash coil are: 1. SEF 6x8 2. Sunray...

I've also been playing around with the SEF 10x12 lately.

I just got the SEF 10x12 myself a couple weeks ago. So far managed to pull one indian I'd missed out of a yard I hit pretty hard last year Also got the "penny slam" with it at a new site(large cent, flying eagle, indian, wheats, etc) This site probably isn't a good comparison since I don't...

    Got a penny slam today..

Been looking around an old building that's under construction. Yeah, I know, it's not quite a dime slam, but hey, it is what it is. I bet a lot of folks have had an easier time finding seated dimes than flying eagles. (not me for some reason, I've got 3 or 4 flying eagles but no seated dimes)...

First hunt of the year (sort of), got one nice keeper to show for it.

Got out for my first real hunt of the year today. I say this because I went out yesterday too, but it was to try to locate a wedding ring for somebody. First the ring story..Apparently somebody lost their wedding ring while throwing leaves doing spring cleanup. I figured it would be easy...

Best small coil? Sunray X-5, Excelerator 5, etc?

I'm looking at getting a small coil, right now only have the stock coil and the excelerator 14" The obvious choices would be the sunray X-5 or the excelerator 5". I seem to recall there's also some other small ones like a 4.5 x 7", I forget who makes it though. Which one would folks recommend...

No barbers, but looks like I might have found an indian artifact today.

Got this today while digging for another signal. Tried out the large coil today see if it could see through the iron. Got some non-ferrous targets I'd missed, but all trash pretty much. Bunch of iron falses that I dug too just in case. I got this while digging for one of them. Thought it was...

Went back and got a 5th Barber today..

This time a dime. Wasn't real deep either, only about 4" maybe. I think I've done about what I can do on the front lawn of the place until I order a smaller coil, the place is pretty loaded up with iron. Think I'm going to order the 10x12 SEF too, might see what that can find as well. Got plenty...

Better make that a barbershop quartet.

Well, I went back today, and started doing the same general area from a slightly different angle. Got another barber quarter within about 5 minutes. Then got another signal that was kind of weird and started to dig that. Started finding bricks buried about 10"-12" down. Figured it was just a...

A trip to the "barber shop"

I'd been given permission to hunt a house recently but hadn't gotten up that way until too late in the evening the last few days. Well, good thing I got around to it today. Now until I today I've never gotten a barber quarter (4 or 5 dimes and a half dollar, but no quarters) First I got the dime...

Explorer SE vs. the electric dog fence

Went out to an old house today, after hitting a field for a while. Turned on the machine after changing to a smaller coil, and it went completely nuts. Checked everything, dirt in coil cover, coil connectors, changed the coil back to the 14". No dice. Noise cancel didn't do a damn thing. Then...

Got out a bit today, interesting note on falsing

Got out a bit in a field where trees had been clearcut to make way for a development. Wasn't out for real long but managed to get a one piece gilt button, no gilt left on it though. Noticed I was having some falsing though, especially whenever I moved the coil quickly. So I pulled the coil...
