New England (MA) and Midwest (WI) soil differences?

I've been gone a while. Moved from MA to WI. Finally started getting a chance to detect this past week and it seems as if the SE screen readings are different than I'm used to in MA (and the other places in the NE I detected). I've managed 4 silver dimes so far ('01, '50, '53, & '61). I'm...

Plastic clip with NO metal in it?

I'm trying to find a plastic clip, hopefully something like a carabiner, that is very durable but contains no metal so that it isn't detected by my coil or probe. Any suggestions? Thanks, _Rich_

    Bob's Spring Hunt?

Just got back from a week in PA (oldest coin find was a '39 LC) but logged in looking for posts on the spring hunt and can't find any. Am I blind?

    My two cents worth

Never thought I'd find one of these so I bought one (1866) at the last C4 convention. Then I had a good, albeit strange, day on Saturday. Found a Town Common on the map the at I'd missed before. Spent some hours detecting the depth of the bowl but realize more and more that the lower parts...

Fri & Sat finds - Seated .10, heart doohickey,...

On Fri. night after work, went back to where I'd found the Seated Quarter 2 weeks ago and, along with some wheats and one IH, pulled up this stuff. Anyone know what the heart doohickey is for? (I wondered if it was horse gear decoration.) The tiny hammer is kind of cute. I presume the two...

Nice way to start the detecting year - 1878-CC 25c

Internet is out at home for now so I'm posting this quick from work before I head home. Tried to get out detecting on Wed. night but then it snowed before I could get off work. Tried last night and it started raining--at 33 degrees. Said hell with it and detected anyhow. Dug a clad...

Variance between instances of the Explorer

Been a long couple of weeks. Went out to WI and got engaged two weekends ago only to come back and get a phone call the next day that my dad was going so packed the kids and went to Florida for this past weekend for a funeral on Monday. Haven't gotten much digging in except the one day I took...

    How does a cannonball read?

Andy's thread on depth reminded me: How does a cannonball read on the Explorer? I have a few sites where I should have a shot at a Rev. War cannonball but usually don't dig large iron on purpose.

    1803 Draped Bust cent

I'm getting so addicted to the large coppers that I'll forego a better chance at more recent silver if there's a place I've got a better chance of hitting a large copper at. (Having GD, Guv, and Big Mike nail so many on their recent trip here was yet further incentive.) Today it paid off...

    0-31

Anyone ever hit a good target at 0-31? I think I remember Digitrich saying he did once but I don't remember what. The only thing that seems to hit there for me around here is hot (cold?) rocks. (Though some also seem to bounce up and down the right side of the screen too.) Operating in...

    How distinguishable are...

...a nickel III cent piece and foil or tiny aluminum? ...small gold rings and foil-like stuff? What's it good at telling apart and not telling apart?

Any suggestions for detecting around Rindge? Anyone near there want to do some detecting?

KG II counterfeit? Next to Fugio Field

Worked the Fugio Field for a while tonight with nothing to show for it but a 1942 wheat. Had a theory that I tried at the end of the evening--a straight line when walking between two points that show on the old maps. Didn't seem to be working much until I crossed the road and, after a call...

Fugio Field: Willliam III halfpenny  :rage:

Went back to Fugio Field last night. I'm starting to grid an area next to the previous one. Hit a signal that was bouncing around all over but had some nice sound to it. I don't know what was going on in my head but I dug a too small hole, hit roots, and ended up gouging the hell out of a Wm...

First buffalo (I think) with the SE

At least I can't remember any others so far. Went back for about an hour to the place I found the Seated last night. Wasn't finding diddly but got a pretty strong nickel signal on the surface. Dug a 1920 buffalo at about 1" down! Didn't even have to get out the Lesche, just popped it out...

Sitting pretty - but skipped over the barber. (One more off the list)

Still waiting on a Barber but I picked up my first seated tonight! An 1876 CC Seated Liberty dime. :D :D :D Anyone good at grading? Is this a VF-30 obverse and a F-12 reverse? [attachment 99107 080721_SeatedDime_obverse_8351.JPG] [attachment 99113 080721_SeatedDime_reverse_8350.JPG] Went...

    Silver readings (difference/Moutray charts)

A PM from someone to my Pro/Slimline post, along with having looked at Mike's charts again in response to a newbie post, got me thinking and finally posting on this question. On my SE, no matter what coil I use, I don't get a clear difference showing between silver and copper/clad. For...

    wheat distribution

I can't find whomever it was who'd counted up their wheats with the distribution but here's the distribution of the 185 wheats that I've dug and have organized. They seem to follow the mintage distribution pretty well for the most part. 1911   1 1913   2 1914   1 1915   1 1916   1 1917   2...
