10.5 DD for X70 Question:

So I have read that the 10.5 DD will get great depth. What does everyone consider great depth? I will be mainly looking for Civil War relics in an area that I have swept pretty good with the stock coil. Also is there any way to waterproof the 10.5 coil? Sometimes when we hunt there is a lot of dew and I would hate to ruin a coil by using it in the dew.

I've used the 10.5 MF DD for 8 years now and it's the only coil I use. I pretty much only hunt for old coins in yards, older schools, parks, farm fields and woods. I've found old coins as deep as 12" and that's when everything is just right, type of soil, very lil trash and the grass is cut short, but most places the older coins are only 6' to 8" deep and I seem to do ok finding them. I have been to a few places where the soil is so bad that I'm lucky to find a coin 6" deep. As far as not being waterproof, I MD in the dew grass and this last Sat the frost was so heavy my coil was covered with frost the first few hours and pretty wet for a hour or so after it melted. The only thing you do not want to do is put it under water. One other thing, if you see a lot of times Ground Balance numbers below 30 in your area then I'm sure you will like the 10.5 MF DD coil. It seems to work better in the hotter type ground.

I can only address the waterproof issue. Dew or a light rinse off will not damage the coil. The not waterproof warning is in submersion where water pressure can caues damage. I use the HF DD elliptical and rinse it often after using at the beach.

Most of the areas I hunt run from the mid 20s to low 30s and the MF DD coil is performing quite well. I will most likely just leave it on and hunt with it since I currently hunt a lot of schools and public parks.
As far as depth goes, I was hunting a park yesterday(before the downpour started:veryangry and hit just the curled up beavertail part of an old down about 8". Wasn't happy with the beavertail obviously, but happy to hit that target size at 8". I really enjoy the target separation when hunting in the trashy areas I did pull a zincoln from between alot of can slaw and foil near a cookout area in the same park. The zincoln wasn't impreesive but the DD coil let me know it was there in all that junk. That was the impressive part.

Relic hunting is about all I do with my xterra70. I dig bullets at over 13 inches regular. I usually hunt in two tones. One thing I have noticed is that really deep bullets will sometimes read -8, I'm talking over 12 inches. When relic hunting if I get a faint tone only one way and then once you open the hole you lose signal , keep digging there is usually deep lead or somekind of relic. I don't believe in ghost signals. If the 70 made a tone something is usually in the ground.That coil will go deep.

7cents.... I run into exactly what you describe with the numbers running down to a -8. I dig and then loose the signal. I don't believe in ghost signals either but the ground we are hunting is full of shotgun pellets so sometimes it ends up being those or you never find what was there. After digging several of those you tend to not want to dig much of the iffy signals. Talk about a pain in the tail. Maybe I do need to dig deeper and see what made the tones? Do you use the 10.5? Trying to decide if I need to buy another coil or just stick with what I have and pound it on out with the stock coil. I also have to low frequency 9" as well. Just wondering if the 10.5 would be worth the extra money.

I think they are worth the extra money. You can pick up a used one for around 100 dollars. I dig a lot of signals that I cant find and they end up being deeper than my lesche digger. I know use a predator shovel that I won on findmall a few years ago. I just sold a ground shark shovel.

To help the balance you can turn the coil around backwards, and or turn the S rod upside down.

This id one of the traits of the X-Terra's, if it says there is something there, ya better dig it. That is one thing I noticed between the 70 and the 705. The 70 seems more sensitive to this for me anyways..............Mark
