I work a fresh water beach with my excallibur 1 .It has 100s of nails ,but I do find a couple of gold items there regularly.Im wondering what would be the right setting for the excallibur under these conditions? --mike

In my testing of the iron mask feature I've found that even a nail laying over a dime or gold ring will produce a very positive and solid response, but the response can be very bad or even null completely out if you move 90 degrees and continue sweeping. I also found that a short and medium to fast sweep over the target cleaned up the signal greatly, but again it would degrade or vanish if I moved 90 degrees and swept again or swept slower. For that reason, I'd suggest working slow and sweeping over any null or semi breakthough of the audio from several directions, picking up your sweep speed over them, and checking to see if the target will sound off if given the proper chance. Other than that you've got the option of using a machine in all metal and digging every target.

mike can you say how big the nails are? iron mask will kill you with a low conductive target next to it usually so using all metal and sizing your target is probably the best idea. depends on how much other junk is involved also.

The nails are all sizes. There was once a dock and boardwalk at the beach 100 years ago ,until someone burned it down . So the nails from the wood are still there amongst some excellent gold silver and platinum ! I am using an excallibur with the orange thing coil (wot) I am having good luck on low discrimination and sensitivity near the auto mark .Would other settings work better? -mike

if this isnt in the water and you can use another detector with a smaller coil that would be a good idea, gettting away from such a big coil as the wot.
if you have to use the excal/wot combo keep the disc on 0 and try using sens all the way at its lowest setting. you magnify the response of all your targets by turning up the sens as high as your using it, near auto without being in it is as high as you can set it. the next time you get a good signal and its near the nails, try adjusting your sens and see if you can clean up your signal.
