12-30's

I am using Gonehunting's program.
I have been using a rule-of-thumb that anything in the 12-40s should be dug.
I am having more difficulty in the 12-30's where most of the targets are duds, except for a few lead items.

Has anyone figured out how to pre-determine if a target in the 12-30s is good or not?

The choice is up to you if it is worth digging. I like the 30's because I love digging the Indian Heads. Also in the 30's are wheats, large gold rings and small silver jewelry....... and don't forget the rare chance of a $5 gold piece. No way I know of to predetermine what the target is before digging, but I am right by guessing most of the time on IH's, 12-33/34 @ 7-9 inches in my ground.

the only way to know for sure is to dig them all. I found a really worn large cent today. FE/CO 12-38. Only 3 or 4 inches deep.

If you are in an area where you know trashy target are at <4" then only dig the 30s deeper than 4". That's the only way to decipher the good/bad targets. I recently dug a barber dime that read 13-38. It was worn. Also Reales come in at 10-34, 11-36, 12-38 etc.

This is from a hunt today. I've been keeping notes in the field:

12-33, 3" deep, Memorial

12-31, 3" deep, Twist Cap

12-35, 5" deep, 1905 IH penny

12-37, 7" deep, 1917 Wheat penny

12-36, 2" deep, Twist cap

12-33, 4" deep, Twist cap

12-39, 7" deep, Unknown Wheat penny

Field notes, Great idea Ronfin. Nice to see the trends.

I usually start my hunts digging the good tones, 12:00 and above. It is when I pick up the odd bits of good stuff. Then after a while, I get more selective. Finally I cant take it and just coin hunt the best signals. Then I am done for the day....

It really matters where I am at.. If the home place is old I dig everything with a repeatable signal.. found a lot and I mean a lot of cool relics from the 12-03 and up. Don't forget gold can come at anytime.. but I like it all.. several times diggin all the repeatable's opened the ground to even more deeper and better targets... As my late dad used to say Dig Em All..

A 12-37 got me a nice 1853 half dime yesterday. It was the first silver coin the CTX found for me.

I should note that I'm hunting in Ferrous-Coin, Combined. I've found 6 IH's in a spot that I worked to death with my ETRAC, and if I see a 12-35 at 5", it has been an IH almost every time.
