14K Gold chain from a SoCal beach!

Goldstrike

Well-known member
The pic's tell it all. After having shoulder/neck/pinched nerve problems and having not being able to beach detect for several weeks...I was blown away :surprised:when this chain ended up in my scoop and I initially wondered if it was plated but seeing it was marked 14K and a quick acid test confirmed it was solid 14K. Merry Christmas to me!!!! Dry sand, A.M. sens;15 and a lot of luck landed me this beauty!! Now what to do with it? cash it in or keep it and wait till gold goes up? Still blown away in SoCal....G.L. & H.H. & H.H. (Happy Holidays)!!!!!!!!

Wow, very nice find Goldstrike, you live up to your name. Hope you will be feeling better soon, keep up the good work.

Thanks Dale, one thing I wanted to add for everyone to consider is if your lucky to live near a beach, DO NOT DISCRIMINATE ON ANY BEACH! and DIG EVERYTHING!!! This chain I.D.'s at 0 to 1!!! For different reasons, i.e. open links, when the chain is not connected, stones in the chain etc; etc; factor in the numbers displayed.
It's been my experience that chains, both silver and gold but more so gold, are not predictable to I.D. and the numbers can be all over the scale so you gotta dig everything which isn't so hard when it comes to digging in sand!! Persistence is the key!

GS, Whoa, good things certainly come to those who wait. Congrats on a beauty of a find. Looks like recent drop, judging from no scratches. I think that I'd wait for gold to price up again before selling. Thanks for providing the stats, the tid of 0-1,really threw me. BTW-how deep was it ?

I am so jealous of you guys that can beach hunt any time you feel like it! I've been sitting here the last couple of days trying too figure out which beach I'm gonna try in my winter RV trip.

That is a SWEET gold find for sure. And I am strengthening my resolve to dig everything at the beach from now on. Thanks for that, and I'll dedicate my next (well First if you dont count plated) gold strike to Goldstrike!.

Awesome GS! Congrats, a lesson well learned for the rest of us!

Thanks guy's and Ken, the chain was shallow. It was barely under the surface of the sand as is most of the targets I find. I would like to say it's a fresh drop but the temps are cold on the beach and the water is cold so hardly any beach-goers. I'm inclined to think it was one of the surfer's that lost it. They surf year round here!
I don't detect deep for that reason...most good targets are on or just under the top of the sand.
Where abouts do you plan to detect on your next RV trip?
Actually, I'm really grateful I live within 40-45 minutes from the beaches but I would love to detect the gulf coast and Florida coasts. I have done a lot of research into pirate hoards and the suspected areas where they may be buried and I would gladly spend some time in looking and digging a few holes!! Yes, I'm a dreamer and have the gold fever LOL!! but I'm retired (took an early retirement) so I have the time and some rental property so I have some money to dedicate to a trip like this! I'll be going to England again in the New Year and do some detecting across the pond and boy am I looking forward to that! G.L. & H.H.

Also retired early here, GS. I'm looking at the Florida panhandle around Appalachacola at the moment. Prob Jan-Feb after some winter storms have had their way with the beaches.....or so I hope.

England Wow. I was reading somewhere that those last couple of monster caches a Minelab found were almost within spitting distance of each other. THATS the field you want to hunt!

This pic is my best find from an English beach. The stones are CZ but the chain and cross are solid 14K gold. I detected this on a previous trip to England...please read on.
Awesome! Those winter storms certainly stir up the beaches and sandbars in the inlets don't they.
What are the chances of finding old coins and pirate coins and artifacts on the beaches there? BTW I am English by birth (emigrated in the '70's) and so I have family that I visit each year. My brother has a friend that owns some acreage that he was told used to be the site of a Roman encampment. We have a guarantee that it has never been metal detected and considering the owner of the property has no interest in detecting but is willing to let us on there to detect, (for free)!! I can believe him.
Last year, we tried to set it up but because of conflicting schedules, it didn't happen so we are really looking forward to detecting what we think is virgin property. What we are not looking forward to is having to go through an 'inquest' to determine if our finds are the property of the Queen or not!! I'll worry about that after we find something and not before!!

Just an awesome chunk! I read your post early this am...and got out, thnaks for the inspiration!. I live in West Michigan, and we have great stretches of sandy beaches, except today the dry sand was frozen...thanks for posting the signal numbers...very important. I will be getting out all weekend and throughout the holidays with this great necklace you found on my mind!

Sorry for the thread hijack, but tell us more about how you plan to hunt the Roman site; what machines will you be using, etc. Do you have a lot of experience in detecting in Britan?

KinTN....I'll be taking 2 of my machines, my Safari and ATPro. They are both great all rounder's and very flexible. My brother has some machines that we will use as backups. I don't want to take too much equipment because of having to carry it all back in my luggage. Usually, I come back loaded with stuff, collectibles and gifts, so flying there I need to keep it to a minimum.
I have detected in England before but don't have a lot of experience. From past experience, the ground where I come from is loaded with iron and I need to re-familiarise myself with English coins/tones and I.D. numbers before I go. One thing that's exciting is that the land is ancient and steeped in history so anything can be under your coil at any given time. I'm so looking forward to detecting there next year!!

Here's hoping that I read about you and your record cache find next year!!!
