I had a small trade show to attend after work tonight. My 4 year old tagged along to play with all the new tools on display and he had a blast! After making the rounds and leaving, I was surprised it was still daylight out. I took the long way back home just to drive with the windows down and enjoy the cool evening air when Jacob starts bugging me to go metal detecting. Shoot.... you don't have to ask me twice!
There was probably 1/2 hour of daylight left and I was in no area with any promising spots to hit, then I remembered a park on a very old plot of land that dates back to the late 1700's and thought at least I'd have a very remote shot at something old.
We rolled out onto the grass, each with digger in hand, and ready to get to it. The signals were very sparse and a lot of nulling abounded.
Then the Mosquitos found us...:veryangry::veryangry::veryangry: I spied a spot that looked like it was an old path or road bed and hurried over to hunt the berm of ground along it. About 10 steps later I had a penny-dime hit about 3-4 inches deep. Although I knew that some older finds out here in the past had been shallow, I didn't hold out hope for much more than a wheatie. The kid eagerly hacked away at the hole as I was "trying" to retrieve the target and almost stabbed my hand a few times! Pretty soon I got him to cease long enough to pop out a clump from about 4" down and confirmed there was a thin silver edge sticking out the side!
In the darkening light I could barely make out the back of an old Seated Dime! We then hurried back to the van while we still had blood in us that the skeeters hadn't drained. I cleaned it at home and was pleasantly surprised to see a decent 1840 date! If it weren't for the kid egging me on, I wouldn't have spent the 15 minutes of hunting to find it! He is now my official Good Luck Charm! Take care and HH, Mike.
