17 incher = More Stuff ??

Well, yesterday I emailed Larry at NWI and asked if he had any of the big CTX coils. Now some 27 hours later the big brown truck has made an appearance & I have the beast mounted, waxed and ready to go.....Ive put off getting the monster due to my experiences with bigger coils on the older FBS machines ... My cousin Jim recently got a 17 incher and has been raking in the silver so I thought Id better get one while there are still some coins left in the area...... Heading out this afternoon to go over some places where Jim hasn't been to yet and see how it goes... Thanks Larry for the great deal and fast delivery...... So does a 17 incher = more stuff?? Im fixin to find out.... wildherre

I just got this coil also. Used it for about an hour yesterday at an old home. Found a couple of wheats and an Indian. I don't know if it is any deeper than the stock coil, but WOW can you cover some ground with this thing!!!

Anyone with experience on the 17" coil have stories of finds missed with their stock coil or any finds with the stock coil missed by the 17"

I have found silvers and wheats missed with the stock coil, recovery was most likely due to the great overlap of the 17" coil. I like to use it after the propery has been gone over with the stock coil and signal are few and far between. It's a great clean up tool, or open field hunting coil.

Got out for a couple hours at a site that I have found deep stuff at previously...... I normally run in manual sensitivity but put it in auto +3,also lowered my gain down from 30 to 27.....My first impression was "This thing is heavy, awkward & gonna make my shoulder hurt ... I dug some deep iffy targets that I shouldn't have and dug a few rusty crown caps that normally don't see......About an hour in I dug a pretty deep 18 wheatie at about 9" in an area I covered a few days ago with the 11" coil... No iron or anyting around it, just fairly deep....On the previous hunt with the 11, I recovered a 09 & a14 wheatie at similar depths......I have also recovered barber dimes at this site at this depth with the 6" coil near steel posts that make detection near impossible with the 11 & more so with the 17....I detected about another hour before I had to leave an only dug a couple more nail.....After detecting for about 2 hours I realized that the coil didn't feel heavy and awkward any more and my arm & shoulder were feeling fine and could have went for a couple more hour with no problem .. Just takes a little getting used to....
The coil pinpoints and separates well and promotes good detecting practices, swinging slow and overlapping..
Here is a email from my cousin Jim with some tips..

Ken,
I hardly ever use the stock coil anymore....If you go to places that you dug deep coins before you will be surprised at what you missed.....You will see a lot of penny dimes at the 10-11" on the meter...When you dig the hole its hard not to go smaller at the bottom of the hole and then if you didn't pinpoint it just right you think it's a ghost hole or junk really deep......Be sure to widen the hole at the bottom when you can't get it pinpointed before giving up.....My detector seems to detect a little deeper than I can pinpoint sometimes......Not sure how that happens.....I've used the 17" so often it seems like a waste of time using the stock coil.............................Jim

I'm not convinced that the 17 is any deeper yet , but I think it will work well for covering large areas and should help in gravel areas where you get a lot of on edge and angled coins.... I'm looking forward to getting out with it this weekend at a few other sites and see if it produces.......wildherre

Do you guys with the 17" coil run an open screen with combined tones or use your discrimination pattern?

I am just concerned about too many pieces of junk causing the machine to null out and miss a good target so I have been running in auto +2 with an open screen and combined audio.

I found the 17 incher in my North Ga dirt to actually get less depth....I can not run it wide open sens...I can usually get to about 22 or so before it falses very bad....if I get in good dirt I can get it to 30 sens...But I dont have alot of good dirt...

I think its a field coil and a beach coill..maybe a dry beach coil if its saltwater......

I find more use for the 6 inch than the 17...

but it's a site coil for sure...

I dont think its deeper than the stock coil if it is its not much at least in mineral dirt anyway's.

Good luck with it!

Made it to a spot that has produced well in the past but has dried up.. I have not found any keepers or any coins at all for that matter, at this place for a couple of years, but hit it a few times a year to try out a new detector or coil.........I was there a few weeks ago with a F75 & small coil combo..
After about 10 minutes of hunting I found a 1919 wheatie from about 9 ".... . It was in the mulch area around a tree about 90 degrees from where I found my best ever coin back in 2009.... This one was an iffy signal that was much better north & south than east & west... I have circled this tree every time that Ive been there in hope of finding another memorable find, so am very happy to find anything there at all ..... No other finds for the rest of a three hour hunt..... wildherre

Went to a old park where I dug my oldest ever coin.....Its kind of a mixed bag, some trashy areas and some with very sparse signals... I wanted so bad to take the big coil off and put on the 6 or 11 but left the big coil on to complete the test...... 2 1/2 hours , no good finds..... I feel I wasted my time here, I should have put on a smaller coil and tried to pick a goodie out of the trash.... wildherre

I only use my 17" in fields or places I hunt with my stock or 6" and I've cleaned it up pretty good, but the 17" always find more, I dug 2 mercs and a westclock pocket watch 2 days ago! The mercs were like 11"

I couldn't agree more with your post. I've been using it on the beach and found you have to bump the manual sensitivity down a bit. I also noticed that when I approach the surf it chatters even more requiring the sensitivity to be turned down even more. I'm a bit discouraged with it because I only hunt beaches and was expecting to get more depth but basically I'm only covering more ground, I hope I'm not missing more deeper targets now, and it is a bit heavy.
