1803 Draped Bust cent

I'm getting so addicted to the large coppers that I'll forego a better chance at more recent silver if there's a place I've got a better chance of hitting a large copper at. (Having GD, Guv, and Big Mike nail so many on their recent trip here was yet further incentive.) Today it paid off. 1803 Draped Bust cent. Obverse is in pretty good shape, although much of the detail seems to be in the verdigris, but the reverse is rougher. Anyone have any good sites for identifying draped bust varieties? (nd.edu and coin.facts seem to be a bust on those.)

Oh, found out today my Fugio is a Newman 7T. (76-200 known) And likely has a double-strike error on the obverse--that took me a while to suss. Still not sure what coin(?) impressed that obverse.) Still not worth s*** though.

Congratulations Rich! I'm still looking for a copper older thatn 1819!

2 this season but yours is in much better shape then mine.I found five coppers this season and all of them were in very poor shape. If I could only just find at least one MS63 it would make my day.Great fun to find though.Congrats.GR

After being in Mass this year that photo of the site looks like the Mass I love. How deep was the copper? That puppy is in great shape. HH

Was about 8", I think. Didn't think about the depth until afterwards. It really sang. Sounded like a mix between a penny and a quarter, mostly quarter, but after I dug a deep plug, it just kept on being there singing away at me. After gouging my next to last large copper (Wm III), I was being really careful. Actually thought I finally had a deep really old silver quarter or half dollar until I was within an inch or so of it, when the probe reading started solidifying.

Sadly, it didnt' turn out in near as good of shape as it looked at first. Thought I had a real beauty at first. I only gave it one H202 treatment but it was quickly evident that much of the surface was peeling verdigris. Probably not even enough to identify the variation, especially taking into account that most of the details for attribution are on the reverse, which seems to be in worse shape than the obverse. (The color on this isn't that accurate and, without yet having Photoshop on this computer, I'm limited in my ability to cleanly color correct.)

Wish I would have taken a shot of the reverse at the same time, although even then I could see that it wasn't as clean as the obverse.

I still haven't replied to your email. (But thanks! And I will reply eventually. I'm just really scattered and not always on top of email, etc.) If you come back next summer(?), I'll take you to that spot if you want. A lot of history there--tell you more via email (remind me if you want)--but probably not as much activity overall as some other places. But it's a large location and would take forever to grid the whole area.

You're a bit far for that, Chris. :)
