1819 Large Cent

Don in SJ

Member
I did my first real hunt since early June this morning, I went to a site that might soon be developed so after 20 years of occasionally hitting it, I will make sure now that I am satisfied I saved as many relics and coins that I can, since once the bulldozers come, it will signal the end to another historic area.

I have really pound this area hard over the years and the last few times there have really been skunk jobs, but this morning I managed one more Large Cent from the site.

The area found was a field in the 1800's and became wooded early in the 1900's.

It cleaned up fairly good.

I was using my almost 7 year old hard used original Explorer XS with the ML 8 inch coil and using the SunRay Probe..........

There has to be more in that site. When they start digging it up, try and either get permission to detect it from the construction companies boss or foreman, or if not fenced in, detect it hard to locate as many more Relics and Coins as you can. Too bad about loosing such a great detecting spot, even though the finds have dwindled over the years. Good Luck and HH.:detecting:

This site has been good to me over the last twenty years, it was off limits for awhile, so really have only hunted it on and off about 3 years. But, it is very hard to find anything at all anymore, More like 3 trips, nothing to 1 trip finding something. But, I hate to think of leaving anything there for it to be destroyed forever.

Here is a list of just the coins I have recovered from this site over the years, oh, I cleaned it using Peroxide, and then put a thin coating of wax on the coin.

1744 Spanish Two Reale
1781 Spanish Half Real
1787 New Jersey Colonial
1794 Liberty Cap Large Cent
1795 Liberty Cap Large Cent
1798 Draped Bust Large Cent
1798 Draped Bust Large Cent
1800 Spanish Half Real
1806 King George III HalfPenny
1819 Coronet Type Large Cent
1820 Coronet Type Large Cent
1824 Coronet Type Large Cent
1840 Coronet Type Large Cent
1865 Two Cent Piece
1867 Shield Type Nickel
1940 Mercury Dime
1951 Washington Quarter
1700+ Unknown Colonial Copper
1796+ Draped Bust Large Cent

My son has similar finds and numbers at the same site, and it was hit by many years before I started pounding it..........

If it is like every other old site we are only getting a small percentage of what is in the ground. With a list of goodies like that I would hit that place everytime they moved a teaspoon of dirt and find out where they are taking any of the dirt they remove.

sure did , cleaned up real good. I would like to find a few of those

Great find, Don!! Perseverence pays. How did you clean it up?
Continued success to you.

Very nice find. You can hit the same site year after year and discover more items that you either missed or were not accessible previously.

Hey Don: How did you get the large cent to clean up so nicely? It looks like you preserved the beautiful patina.
