2-tone Ferrous - holy smokes!

After reading the posts, I thought I would give it a try.

I have a spot that is full of deep iron, and has been hunted since metal detecting began. There are very few conductive hits left, and the area is not really used for anything, so no new stuff is being added.. Over the years I have pulled some really nice coins from there, most when I first got an explorer.....but for the last few years it's been slim pickings. I've hunted it 25+ times, explorer II, explorer SE, and etrac, multiple coils, etc. And despite being a big area, the old coins I've found are in only a few spots. So if this set up is good I thought this would be the perfect test.......

I hunted 2 1/2 hours, and I honestly could not believe the amount of nails at the site. But.....I was able to pull out 4 teen wheats and a buffalo nickel. I was shocked! And that was the first time running in that set-up. And the sick part is that the deep coins hit clean and the ground was bone dry? In conductive mode I was over these targets 10+ times for sure. Another observation was the nickel, in conductive mode they hit very weak, and switching to pinpoint they come in strong. In ferrous they hit very strong.......and I think the machine might hit nickels deeper in ferrous than in conductive?

Anyway....I didn't take any pictures (not really that exciting finds). But I have a couple more spots that this setup might work well once we get a little rain, or later in the year, since it's really dry here right now.

Great job,now you get to hunt a lot of spots over again.
Ferrous is just another great tool for getting coins out of trash.

Thanks Brad. That is a great and informative read.

Having similar experiences here. Not as many finds but it sure does seem to work. It's so dry here I won't do a plug in the grass anymore. I'm 'poppin' the shallow nickel-tab-ring numbers in hopes I trip on a piece of gold jewelry of some kind. jim

...great skills dude!!

Sometimes it takes a while to convince people to try it. It's like a revelation isn't it!!!

Gaz.

I have noticed the same thing, even in dry ground coins seem to really hit hard in ferrous sounds, and for nickels it is like magic, I am finding nickels like crazy using the ferrous sounds.
