22 hours worth of finds from Memorial Day Weekend.

Hello all!!! It's been awhile since I posted on here. Haven't really gotten out too much the last couple weeks due to rain during the weekdays thus creating small paychecks and a lack of extra money for gas for running around but hopefully that is over with now. I did finally get out and do some serious detecting though this past Memorial Day Weekend and it was good to hunt with Dan and Rich Alfano on Sunday since we only seem to see each other at Club Hunts. It was a blast and hope to meet up with you two fella's real soon to do more detecting with. With that said.....let's get to the story and the finds.

Well....Saturday....I decided to go out into Minnesota Country and give the Fairgrounds that Rich and Dan had found 2 Seated at a try. Main reason for going here was there was too many people who knew where this location was and I figured it might have already been hit hard since the locals that live near here had a week to pound the area. I also figured if there was still keepers here......at least Rich and Dan would know just what was left since I would let them know the next time I talked too them.

Anyways.....I arrived at 8:30am and started hunting the area where Dan and Rich had found their Coins at. First signal I got turned out to be a Wheatie that was pretty crusted up and dated 1920. I started to wander around a bit noticing where the Plugs were and had a good idea where they had been hunting. I was over in an area and got a good 28 on Digital and dug the target. First Barber Dime of the day! I then worked around this area just a bit and managed one more Barber Dime. I then started wandering about again trying to think of areas where there may have been activity in the past that might have not been hit so hard. As I worked....I noticed that pretty much every spot had at least a plug or so so it was going to be an interesting hunt for sure. As I worked, I would pick up a Wheat here and a Wheat there and then an Injun. I decided to go try out where a pole was in the middle of this area thinking maybe that gaming stores sat along this area. I was about 4'-6' past one side of the pole when I got a Deeper 26 on Digital but then noticed that there was another target next to this reading a bit higher....27. I dug the 26 first and it turned out to be an Injun. I then went and rescanned the hole with the probe and it sang out again. I dug out more dirt and another Injun with a Buffalo Nickel comes out. Cool!!! I then rechecked the hole and yet another signal but low tone. Another Buffalo Nickel surfaces. Went in again and one more target still!!! Dug more dirt out and out popped a Barber Dime! AWESOME!!!! I then covered the hole and worked my way towards the car. About 10' away, I dug another Wheatie. I went and then sat in the car drinking a quick soda and thinking of where I should try next. It was starting to get really warm out and thank god that the wind was blowing around 20mph or it would have been a real cooker out. I was getting a pretty good sunburn as well but it wasn't bad enough to feel it.

About 5 minutes go by and I decide to go try along the ditch area where I picked up the other 2 Barber Dimes earlier but farther into the Fairgrounds. I got right next to the ditch before it started going downhill and got a shallow 30 on Digital. I was thinking Clad Quarter or Junk and decided to dig it. Good thing I did!!! I opened up a plug and popped the x-1 Probe in. It sang out but the target was Deeper than what the detector had registered. I dug about 3 inches of dirt out and out pops a 1929 Standing Liberty Quarter! WOW!!! I then rechecked the hole and it sang out again. I went and removed more dirt and found an Injun with a 24-d Mercury Dime. I then checked the hole again and another signal. Know I was thinking this place is just too good to be true but there I was finding all kinds of goodies and my second pocket spill of the day! The next target to surface was yet another Standing Liberty Quarter but Dateless. Then the hole went silent. I just sat there in amazement....thinking if it wasn't for that lone Wheatie before the car.....I would have had 2 pocket spills back to back! Talk about crazy!!! I then moved forward into the ditch and about 3' away from this pocket spill I got a 26 on Digital. I dug it and out pops another Indian Head. I then started walking along the side of the ditch and got about 30' or so and got a Deeper 28. Dug that target and out pops an 1899 Canadian Dime. I then kept working around this area and soon found a few Clad Quarters that were about 3" Deep that should have been Oldies but I wasn't complaining since I was doing great on finds so far. I kept working until around 4:30pm which is when I finally popped out my 10th Silver for the day and decided to call it quits. The sunburn was setting in and it was a great day of detecting for sure so I was very happy with what I had for the day. In those 8 hours of hunt time, I managed to pull 2 Standing Liberty Quarters, 5 Barber Dimes, 1 Canadian Dime, 2 Mercury Dimes, 2 Buffalo Nickels, 4 Injuns, 10 Wheats, 5 Junk Tokens, 2 Keys, 2 Whatzits, a Cub Scout Clasp, a Button and a Copper Ring. Wow!!!..........what a day of detecting!

Sunday morning....Rich called me up and asked what I was doing today. I looked at the clock and it was a little after 8:00am and told him I was just about to head out and do some detecting. He asked where and I told him either down south or up north. I then asked what he was up too and he said he was thinking about detecting today instead of waiting until Monday when I was suppose to meet up with him and Dan. He then asked where I hunted and I told him. I then told him I left shortly after 4:00pm when I had my 10th Silver and he said "you didn't find 10 Silver". I started laughing and told him yeah I did. He then asked what I got and then I told him about the 2 pocket spills and all the stuff I pulled the day before. He was in shock since Dan and him had revisited the site a few days before I did and thought they had worked the area pretty good. Well.....they did pound the area that's for sure and it took some really serious patterning to get what I did from here. I told him if he wanted to hunt today, I would drive back out. He then called me back and told me to head out. I grabbed my gear and out the door I went. The great thing about this was that it was only going to cost me $20 round trip for gas and I was going to hunt with a couple buddies that I hardly ever get to see or hunt with so it was looking to be another fun filled day of detecting.

I arrived shortly after 11:00am and there was Dan and Rich working the area. I got out and grabbed the gear and went to talk to Rich. Rich then pointed out into the open area and showed me that there was a guy out there with a White's Detector as well. Rich then told me that he had stopped by when Rich and Dan first found this spot and asked if he had found anything. Rich showed him the Seated Dime he had found and then the next thing Rich knows is that this fella is out swinging with a White's that day. I guess the White's user found a few Injuns and a Walking Liberty Half Dollar the day after Rich showed him the Seated. Anyways...I don't think the White's user found anything that day since he wasn't there very long. I started to work over in an area where there was some vehicles parked the day before due to a Construction Company working on building new doors to a fence. I started hunting and about 20 minutes go by and I find my first keeper for the day......a Barber Dime dated 1912. I yelled over to Rich and told him Barber Dime. Rich had already found a Barber Dime before I got there and Dan hadn't found anything as of yet. I kept detecting and popped out a Wheatie or 2.

I then hear Rich's phone ring and then notice that it must be Dan since he is talking on his. They talk shortly and then Rich hangs up. He then tells me that Dan just pulled his very first Barber. I then asked a Dime and he said nope....a Barber Quarter dated 1893-o. I then noticed where he found it and it was about 15' away where I had stopped the day before. There was a pole out by the ditch I had stopped at and was working back and forth from where he popped out this find. That lucky little #!*@! I then thought it would be a worn Barber Quarter and started hunting again. I worked my way back out into the middle where I found my first pocket spill the day before and shortly there after I pop out a Silver Rosie. I worked around a bit and another Wheatie surfaces. I then started wandering around and run into a real shallow Merc. I then started working towards Rich and near the front of my car. I got a shallow 28 and could barely get the signal with the Pro Coil due to the Iron in the area. I dug a plug and there was a Silver Disc sitting on edge in the plug. I called Rich over and asked what it was going to be since it was worn on the edges. I asked Seated and he said maybe. I then said watch....it's a worn Merc and sure enough that's what it was. Darn!!! I was hoping for Seated to complete the slam but not lucky enough. Rich then asked if I wanted to go check out a few other spots and I said sure. Dan came over and had the Barber Quarter in his hand. I was shocked to see it was a beauty with full liberty on it. I looked it over and told him congrats on his first Barber Quarter and a very nice one at that. I told him it was probably worth around $50-$100 which added a little smile to his face. We then went and hit a Park with nothing found, an older Ball Diamond across the street from a Church where Dan picked up a Foreign Coin and 2 Wheats from the Ball Diamond, Rich a Silver Rosie and me a Silver Quarter and 2 Wheats on the Boulevard. We then had someone stop and tell us of some construction going on and that he had found a 1926 or 1927 Quarter laying on top of the ground where the sidewalk was. We drove over and started hunting. I got 2 Wheats and as I was walking along where a sidewalk was, I noticed a Quarter laying where the sidewalk was. I swept the Coil over it to make sure it was metal and it sang out. I bent over and picked it up and was surprised to see the back to a Silver Quarter. I flipped it over and it was dated 1943. Rich asked what I found since he heard me yell over to Dan and tell him and then told Rich a Silver Quarter laying on top of the ground where the sidewalk once was. He just shook his head and continued detecting. I headed towards Rich and told him that I didn't even swing the Coil over it....that I seen it laying there on the ground and then swept the Coil to make sure it was Metallic. He then said "you didn't even find it with your detector.....that's even worse!". I sat there chuckling at him and then continued hunting. Rich found a few Wheats and I picked up another Wheatie that read 21 on Digital. I knew it was a Coin on the boulevard due to the depth it was at....which was about 10"-11" Deep. Dan didn't find anything old here but we then moved on since someone must have pounded these boulevards pretty hard in the past.

Next stop was a Park where I only got a Wheatie at, Rich a Wheatie or 2, and Dan a Merc and 2 Wheats I believe. We also had stopped at another spot and this is where I found the Shell Game Token. It was full of Junk so we didn't stick around long at that spot. We then headed back over to the Fairgrounds and Dan and Rich headed back home. I decided to stick around for about an hour or so to see what else I could find. In that amount of time, I found a few Wheats, an Injun and 2 more Barber Dimes before leaving myself. All in all it was a fun day of detecting with buddies I hardly get to see or hunt with. It was great to see Dan get his first Barber Quarter also. Now that's PRICELESS!!! Finds for about 8 hours hunt time were 2 Silver Quarters, 3 Barber Dimes, 2 Mercury Dimes, 1 Roosevelt Dime, a Toy Car, 2 Broken Keys, a Boy Scout Clasp, Shell Game Token, 1 Injun and 14 Wheats.

Monday morning, I couldn't decide where to go so I got out a Dollar Coin and flipped it for Head being North (School) or Tails being South(what I think may have been a Fairgrounds at one point). Head it was and North I went. I arrived here rather later in the day.....around 11:30am and started to work the School area where I had popped out a few Injuns, a Canadian Dime, Merc, Rosie and some Wheats off of the boulevard a few weeks before. I worked this School area for about 6 hours and didn't manage a whole lot for Silver. I thought it would have had more but it didn't....at least for Silver. I pulled a Cracker Jack Token, a SWEET Badge type item, a Silver Quarter, Merc, Rosie, 5 Injuns and 22 Wheats.

I then stopped on the way home for about an hour at where an Old Drive-In Theatre was at one time and found 2 Wheats and another Silver Quarter. Then off I went with another good days detecting in.

Grant, 5 Junk Tokens with No Cash Value on reverse, a Toy Car, a Copper Ring, a Suspender Clasp, Boy Scout Clasp, Cub Scout Clasp, 4 Keys (3 broken), 2 Buttons, something that looks like Dice, a round Ornate item, a Badge item of some sort that reads Reg. I have yet to research this and see if I can find out what this might have been from.

Another successful hunt and a much needed one that's for sure. Thanks for looking and hope you enjoy the read and the finds. Best of Luck to you all and HH if you make it out this weekend.

Nice Finds James its crazy seeing the silver and other oldies you pull out of the ground. Might have to hook up with you some time this summer to do some MDing. I think im finally starting to get comfortable with my etrac besides my elbow and shoulder getting sore but no pain no gain. HH Josh

Lot of hours, but it looks like you got to put the detector down a few times. VERY nice digs. It takes a lot of moving around to find that kind of silver...... wouldnt you just like to find a honey hole and dig for a few hours lol?

you know what would happen next........you wouldn't want to stop but keep working it. LOL! It took some tight patterning to get a lot of this stuff from the Fairgrounds but it was worth it. Thanks for the reply and Good Luck and HH to you on your next outing.

Excellent post, James. I enjoy the all the details you give about the hunt (digital readings, etc.). Graham-Paige was an automobile I think.

Only thing is that I get up most of the time early and head out and do a bit of driving before I hunt but if your up to it, I will see if I can't find a spot closer to home and possibly hook up with you. I'll keep you posted. Good to hear you still using the E-Trac and hope your next outing has a few Silvers in it for you. Good Luck and HH to you.

Up north it was more damp last Monday since they had some rain but other than that, the ground is a bit dry. Hope to see you again when your in this neck of the woods. Good Luck and HH to you.

I like adding a little adventure to my finds as I found them hoping that some of the info will help others have a better chance of finding some goodies themselves. Key is patience, patterning a site and having fun while being out that will get you some great finds....that and some luck, research and a good site to hunt. Thanks for the reply and Good Luck and HH to you on your next outing.

Hope you get out this weekend for a bit and get a couple goodies as well. Good Luck and HH!

Nice Haul!

Lots of nice finds and I really enjoy your posts, especially your excellent narratives. The maker of that one badge like device is D.L. Auld Co. of Columbus, OH. According to the Internet, they have been in business since at least 1904 and made stampings, anodizing, and other metal working. I think they are still around but believe they are now part of 3M. Thanks for sharing your finds and I wish you continued good luck. HH

James glad to see your still around my friend!!! Keep it up!!!!!!!

amazing to me just how much stuff is still in the area but it's getting farther and farther away that's the kicker. It was one of my best hunts as far as Barber goes during a weekend. I'll try and keep it up Derrelld.....and I'm sure you won't be disappointed on the next post since I found more goodies today. Thanks for the info as well TokenDigger. I checked Graham Paige out this morning an it turns out that it was actually an automobile but haven't tracked down what the car looked like that had this emblem. And thanks again Rich (Utah).....glad you liked the post. Good Luck and HH to you all on your next hunts.

Awesome finds, and a very enjoyable read:thumbup:

Looks like a very good 22 hours of detecting James.:clapping: and as always a great story. I'm not alone when I say that wouldn't it be nice if we could all have a successful hunt like that. Haven't had a chance to give my repaired XS a workout yet. Passed on an out of town hunt Sat as the entry fee was $120 for three planted hunts. I would have used my Predator II for this hunt had I gone as a planted hunt wouldn't have shown what my XS can really do now that she is fixed and like brand new again. Great post James and look forward to your next one. Good luck and HH.

Eddie

that's a nice haul out of our spot James lol. that's pretty cool u got a 1909 VDB. hope to get back together and do some swinging but until then HH:throw:

We will most definitely get back together and do more hunting soon. I will have to see what's going on this weekend and maybe I could swing up and pick you up for a days worth of detecting if you dad is working....wouldn't that get his goat when he found out you were out and brung home more finds. LOL! I'll have to give you some pointers next time together to help you increase your finds ratio also Dan.

Eddie...thanks for the reply and hope your machine is working in tip-top shape now. Now you have to find the time to get out and make some finds so will stay tuned until then.

Well...thanks again and Good Luck and HH to you both on your next outings.
