25 to 1 wheat to silver ratio!

Have a spot that I've hit about a dozen times over a two
year period. Found a 36 merc (with the tejon), a 62 rosie, and 50 wheat pennies!
Seems like a serious imbalance to me.
Another thing I thought to be odd is that only one of the wheat's was in the 30's and
the rest were in the 40's and 50's.
It's kind of like the twilight zone to me. The coins are spread out in an area
about the size of a football field with the majority of them coming from about a 20 yard
circle in the middle of the area.
Any one else have a spot like this?
Not counting this spot the wheat penny to silver ratio is more like 7 or 8 to one.
Think I'll give it one last try before I retire the spot.

Sounds very much like a typical spot where penny showers were held for the little tykes. Be my best guess anyhow.

Penny pitching? If it's a public site or hunted before, it could just be cherry picked for silver by someone not digging any penny signals. Too many weird things to even hazard a real guess. Fifty wheat pennies is one roll of pennies... could be on dropped and burst or, who really knows.

What's a penny shower?
I've got a whole 38 years on my belt and have never been invited to a penny shower,
and 27 of those years were spent in Nebraska!
Have some good spots in NE that my dad told me about.
If I ever get back to visit the relatives I'll send you a PM.
 
You get all the 2-4 yr olds, usually around a holiday like 4th of July, or a Town Founders day picnic, carnival, fair or what not. Put 'em in a cirlce and shower them with pennies (usually 20-50). Then there's a free for all. Of course with that age they haven't yet grasped the monetary value of a penny....so the parents egg 'em on. They always miss a few and through the years it adds up. They still do this in Comstock on the 4th of July and in that park I avoid that area. Those darn pennies in that particular wet soiled park are sinking down to 5-7 inches in less than 5 years.

I know for a fact they did this in other places too, at least 4 more that I hunt, I've had people come up and point out where the penny showers were. This sounds like it might be a reason you've found so many in a circle.

If this has been brought to my attention before, please forgive me. Where in Nebraska did you live? You might've told me Northeast at one time, but I can't clearly recall without looking it back up. Any good spots you found around the state?

I agree with Nick, it has been cherry picked. I find that 5 wheats to 1 silver is the average at least for me. This year I have 99 silver and 444 wheats, so that is right at 4.4 wheats to 1 silver

Born and raised in Grand Island.
Went to college in Lincoln.
My dad spent most his life there too, and he
knows of some old farmsteads and knows about a few old schools.
He grew up across the street from a pony express station, but
not sure what if anything is there now.
He hit an old school last time visiting and found some v nickles and a few indians and
a little silver.

I'll bet its hard to believe how much G.I. has expanded the last 5 or so years. Don't know if you've heard but the moved the State Fair out of Lincoln to G.I., and also this years state Volleyball Tourney was held there. I live north of Broken Bow, 'bout 25 miles.

My ratio is about 12 wheats for each silver. I have a spot in a park where each year they have a "penny shower" I have checked it out last two years, first year found 191 pennies, which included one wheat and this year 151 pennies which included two wheats. My wife likes to go over the spot with the pinpointer and give me handfuls of pennies!
 
Had a side yard at a private residents back in the 80's that I hit a Wheat penny spill and dug 28 Wheat pennies , no silver and the biggest mans 22K wedding band you ever saw. Weighed 1/2 oz.

I figure some kids got a hold of their dad's penny jar took it outside and lost the contents. The property was vacant at the time so I had no one to ask about it. That was only the second 22K ring I ever found.

The only other 22K ring (a ladies 1921 friendship ring) and that was on a football field littered with pull tabs, and I decided to dig a few to see what I could come up with. That was the only ring I found. Wish I could have more patience to dig more of those tabs as I know the rings are mixed in with them. Just to tough at 64 getting up and down that many times.

I know what your feeling about the up and down taking it's toll
on a body, and I,m not even 40 yet!
The gold to tab/foil ratio has to be one in a million at best.
Lately my silver to junk ratio has been feeling similar!

Deep Digger - For sure on the tabs/aluminum junk. Most of my junk is in those two items and most of them are dug because they read so close to nickle readings witch I dig every one of them. My nickle to junk ratio is seven nickles to three pieces of aluminum trash, and that's not bad at all, much better then any other machine I have ever owned. Also I have had really good luck in the past finding gold rings in the nickle readings. I haven't found one with the E-Trac yet but it a coming attraction.

I have dug very few pieces of iron junk (nails and so forth). Most have been in the hole with good targets. Yesterday I found a aluminum 1917 political token with a rusty old nail laying across it. I like those kind of finds just as much as I do the coins. After all what makes this hobby so interesting is the history behind our finds.

One reason I dig so few pieces of iron is the Quick Mask feature, it really helps separate the iron from the good targets, and I've dug some really interesting finds because of that programs ability to let me know if I'm digging iron and a good target in the same hole. The Political Token I was telling you about was one of those targets, the sound was iffy but the CO numbers read in the low 40's so I checked the Quick Mask screen and it showed the target cross hairs in the upper part of the box so I dug it. That scenario has happened to me several times already and by far most of the time it's worth the dig.

Keep digging, it isn't about getting rich, it's about enjoying what your doing, getting some exercise and just having some fun. Rick
