2nd time out using my XLT with Tone ID(I think?)

First off, ooohf it's VERY minelabish-if that's a word.. Can't remember how many tones it has but if you put that number of cats under a washtub and kicked it I think it would sound the same! :~)

On the plus side while sometimes very noisy IT WORKS. I heard a small high tone that was repatable in amoungst a mass of other signals, dug and out pops a 47 wheat @ about 6 inches under foil and iron crap. (it think it was hitting +85? hard to tell) Also dug a 18 wheat nearby. I think the piece with the hoop on it is a old soda bottle stopper. Found tabs and a few pennies and two dimes.

What's the deal with iron bottlecaps??? I swear every machine I have likes em'

Not sure if I like the Tone ID or not. I will have to play with it a bit more.

If you are experiencing a lot of tones, it sounds like you are running it too hot............you must have stability first. Each VDI# has it's own tone and if bottlecaps are a major problem, try increasing your bottlecap reject at the expense of losing separation of good targets with iron nearby. With higher cap reject, you might not have heard the 47 wheat. Every adjustment is a compromise.

I was using the factory program coins& jewlery, I'll try dropping the AC? sens. (is that right?) Also I'm using the 9.5 coil so that might be a problem too. Most of the park is pretty open, but some parts are a carpet of junk.

Yep, AC and if that doesn't seem to help much, try lowering the Gain one notch. I don't have much of a problem with the stock coils, but there are MANY who prefer the 5.3 for some of the best hunting of their life......

With the Tone ID on the bottle caps scream like a stuck pig sound but so does out 2 dollar coins so have to get use to that

Tone ID is not for everyone but Whites gives you the option and using one tone most can distinguish the target more with one tone and you can even change that one tone higher or lower to fit your hearing and personal preferences.

Bottlecap reject once you learn what number works for you should give you a ratty signal on iron.

Personally trying to much too quickly will certainly confuse so would take a preset program raise the preamp gain and use it for several weeks before you dive into all the changeable facest lest you become totally confused and become a tweakers tweaker as setting up improperly will do more harm than good...

Thanks for the help guys! Slowly I'll get the hang of it. I'm gonna pick up one of the Spectrum Secrets books I'm sure it will help. I also found somebody with the users man and the engerning report too. Good to read up on even the "basics" so I have a good foundation to work from. Hopefully, I'll be able to hunt thru mid October till the ground freezes!

i use tone id most all the time alot of the time a can pick out a silver coin just by its tone also modify my programs dont us stock programs theregood but i can get betteruse beach jewlry silent search 69 ac sens 35 dc sens 10 pre amp gain tone id on vco on bottle cap 1 always ground balance each sesativaty change vary sens as needed 72 ac 12 pre amp in woods or were ever i can go lower if to much falsing works great for me try it youll like it get out of the stock programs get spectrum secrets book has a lot of good in site i use the newer xlt this book covers that also

Do not use the bottle-cap reject control, as some have suggested. It will only muffle other signal's clarity, and thus have drawbacks, as others have admitted. The better way to discern bottle caps vs conductive targets, is to momentarily increase your swing speed over suspected caps. The iron in them will give a tell-tale different signal, with an increased sweep speed. If it starts to "break up", it's a cap. If it "gets better" it's a coin (or conductive target).

An experienced XLT user usually uses a 1 setting as to an experienced ear it will alert you to iron...Have to admit setting it higher will do more harm than good. As far as individual settings a lot depends on your ground, individual likes and dislikes so what works for one guy or gal may not work for another..

Honestly just my opinion and Whites gives us choices and am sure if you saw 6 XLT users in a field probably find individual differences so use what works for you.

As far as preset programs usually a little weak but tweaking individual preset programs would be my advise as many excell with their individual tweakings...

In other words no secret super duper programs, just ones that work for you in your neck of the woods...

Thanks for the tips! I just got the user man and the engerining report WOW! It' will take me weeks to absorb all the info in those.(fade,acculmulate,avg etc....) I've always thought the signagraph is the best/most useful feature ever put on a machine- I dug one of the multi- bar(pos smear?) + responses the other day and it was a piece of braided copper wire w/ lead clamp - no not a piece of jewelry but it could have been!


I'm also glad to see there are shortcuts to get to some of the basic adjustments like the backlight! Big help and Big thanks to - foiledagain - for the books.

I'm really enjoying the XLT, it may take quite awhile to master it, but I think it will be worth it.

I can't imagine hunting without tone ID. I use a DFX and my neighbor uses an XLT and never turned it on. We were hunting together one day and I was smoking him and he was digging junk. So I turned on his tone ID, and he was able to pick out good signals. He did admit it was a little noisy, but he was starting to find good targets. As far as the bottle cap reject, it will make it harder to hunt in an iron infested area , thus learn to use the signagraph... it tells the truth .
