3 hours with "Swamp Thing"...then 2 hours with another friend in 95 degree heat:surrender:

I thought I had 2 very sweet finds yesterday..but they turned out to be a couple of podunkers:biggrin:

I didn't figure on hunting at all yesterday...and haven't been able to in over 3 weeks:stars:...but circumstances changed.

I was in the middle of mowing my dad's property when I noticed what I thought was the "Swamp Buggy" :)pulling up the long driveway.

I then glanced over again and noticed this big blob off in the distance:jump:...and it looked to be somewhat mobile.

Next thing I know...here comes Darrell's (Deeponedge) big, truck drivin' butt...heading towards me. :clapping:

He says..."I'm going to help you mow...then we're going hunting for a couple of hours"

GREAT!! I told him to put his rump in high gear as he headed towards the 2nd rider:)

I also informed him he needed to pull his freakin' shorts up past his butt:cool:...otherwise he was going to trip and fall on the way.:smoke:

Anyway...thanks to Deeponedge (Darrell)...AKA the "Swamp Thing"....we turned a 7 hour job into less than 4 hours of mowing.
Thanks bro...I appreciate it.

He and I do a lot of "razzing" at each other...but it's all in good fun...and we both know it.

We didn't have time to go to his cabin site...but he did get us permission to hunt an older home built around 1920 or so...and it had NEVER been hunted.

I won't bore you with the details of each wheatie, injun' and silver find..but I will tell you that the shallowest coin I found was at 7". The rest were mostly from right at 8" deep with a couple from 9"...and one from 10".

My two big thrills of the day ended up being letdowns once I got home:wacko:...but the thrill of not knowing...or thinking I possibly had something sweet....was worth the price of admission.:)

The big medal looking thing is what I thought at first was an old coin...possibly silver....inside one of those pendant coin holders which is worn from a chain.

It was over 9" down and found within 10 feet of a big old oak tree.

I didn't want to rub it...so I carefully placed it in my pouch to await cleaning when I got home. I truthfully thought I had a nice old coin of some kind inside an old bezel.:lmfao:

The 2nd find which almost caused a change of shorts...was the beautiful dark brown Lincoln cent that came from 10" down.

I did not have my glasses with me...nor did I have them in the car...but I thought for sure it looked like it said 1914D.:super:

Hey...it's 90 degrees....I was excited from not hunting in over 3 weeks...I didn't have my glasses...AND I've never found a 1914D.

Well...I STILL haven't...'cause once I got home and rubbed some dirt off...it clearly says 1918D.:bouncy:

You know what though...I honestly don't care because I have already found 2 key date coins this year.

The thought of thinking I had found 2 sweet items was still a thrill for me even though they turned out to NOT be what I was hoping for.

That's what it's all about for me...the thrill and excitement of what this hobby brings me.

I had no intention of actually getting to hunt...and had brought my detector with me the last 4 trips here without getting to even take it out of the trunk.

Thanks to Darrell (Deeponedge)...I was able to sneak in a 3 hour hunt...and regain some peace and solace to an otherwise very stressful last 3 weeks. THANKS AGAIN "Swamp Thing"

I ended up the day with a few wheaties....2 injuns'...2 mercs...an 1899 Barber dime...some trinket jewelry...and whatever that freakin' medallion thing is.

My buddy who was sporting the classy, sagging shorts:crylol: did well too..ending up with a merc...and injun...and a few wheaties.

The next morning I gave another buddy a buzz and we agreed...we BOTH would do well to last more than 2 hours in the nasty heat and humidity.:detecting:

Neither of us had hunted in 3 weeks...until I hunted with Darrell the day before....and the Yeti was itchin' to hunt.

We decided we would go to a site less than 30 miles away that we had hit 4 previous times when we were REALLY BORED:). We had not found any silver here thus far:shrug:...but had little time to work with because of the heat....so that's where we went. We were both determined to NOT give up on this place until we had pulled a silver out of it.

Well...after 1 1/2 hours..we were melting...my buddy was thirsty:wacko:...and there were no wild berries for him to graze on.:help: Things looked grim here as usual...then I found a nice little hot spot.

I popped out a 1964 Roosey from about 7" on edge...then a couple of wheaties. SWEET...now we know there's silver here.:clapping:

A few minutes later I hear a bellowing to my left so I turned and saw the my buddy......sweat pouring off of him...and he too had popped out a Roosey.

About 10 minutes later I got the sweet hit I was hoping for...a deep warbler. I called over the my buddy...and we both agreed...SILVER...and DEEP.

A few minutes later I popped a nice old merc in the rusty, iron filled clod.. as you can see. :) The dirt in the hole was all rusty looking and there were tiny iron particles everywhere. Gotta' love the explorers:beers:

A very nice 2 hours for the us and I from a site that had skunked us on silver the previous trips there.

I ended up with 1 merc...a Roosey...and 4 wheaties...and my buddy got the other roosey pictured...along with a few wheaties too.

Thanks for viewing everyone...and good luck hunting.

Great post Bryce.... and congrats on some interesting finds
and of course the silvers fron the "once skunked" site. Glad you
were able to get some help from Darrell so you could get out
and do a little detecting. What is that medallion looking thing? Did you
ever figgure it out? Kinda looks like it could be Aztec or Myan possibly.
Anyway, enjoyed your post and welcome back to life!!
Gold Nuggets :wiggle:

At least you got to go out swinging. Looks like you had a great time. :beers:

Thanks Lonnie. It was definitely a good time...especially when the first hunt was an unexpected one.

Darrell helped me out a bunch. No way I would have been able to hunt that day...and had no intentions of it.

Thanks buddy. I wish I could get out more often but it just isn't going to happen that way right now.
Maybe when mowing season slows down somewhat...I can find a little more time...but the work schedule has increased a bunch too.
It's always good to swing the coil though whenever I get the chance.

Thanks G.N.
Swampthing saved the day for me...and I don't forget acts of kindness like that:thumbup:

I don't know what the heck that medallion thing is...but I assume it'junk. It sure isn't the ancient coin in a bezel like I thought it was going to be:crylol:

It did feel real good to pull a couple of silver coins from that site which previously shut us out. The Yeti popped out one too...so it was a good day.

Nice finds Bryce,
Good friends are hard to come by.
Glad you got to get out.
Best of luck
LabradorBob

Nice finds & it was good you could get out again after a few weeks. I hadn't been out for almost 3 weeks either when the ground started getting really dry around here so I was afraid to go anywhere. After the rains this week, the ground should be better for a while. I hope I can get out more often in Sept. than I have in Aug.

either way I love the look of that cool item in the bezel. At first I thought it might be a weight of some sort for a scale because of the number 10 in the little box, but the wreath on the one side and eagle(?) and star with olive branch and arrows as well as the sun rays on the other side show an amazing amount of detail - it looks old, and I would have been quite proud to have found that - much better than a silver coin for sure. I'd post it on the Whatzit forum and see if someone can ID - you might be pleasantly surprised when you get some more info on it.

Nice job!

Thanks Dan.
I was literally going nutso from lack of hunt time...but I have so much on the plate that it makes it hard to do any hunting at all right now.

Don't forget...you and I..along with the Yeti...need to pound some of those seedy parks down your way before long. We still have a lot of the hunting season left..and hopefully things will slow down for me a little in a few weeks. Right now mowing takes up all my free time...but no way I'm letting Dad do it alone.

Thanks Bob. You hit the nail on the head...and it isn't the same without the Yeti or Darrell with me on a hunt.

Our work schedules always conflict though...or priorities...etc.

It felt so good to squeak 2 short hunts in though.:clapping:..I'd almost forgotten what it felt like.

Thanks Erik.

I felt like a little kid all day.. waiting to "see" what it was after cleaning it.

Then once it was cleaned...I felt like a putz:biggrin:

Same for the sweet old lincoln...I'd have sworn it was a 14D...but again was hit with the "putz" syndrome once it was cleaned a little.:smoke:

You're right though...it might end up being something good after all..you just never know.

Congrats again on that sweet cob you found. That is a find of a lifetime for most of us.

It's a great find for sure - the sun rays leading off of the 10 make me believe it was some sort of special achievement award of some sort. It was certainly put in a bezel rather than having a hole drilled through it because it was good and I'm sure this is a rare find - I'm sure someone will ID it for us soon.

Re the reading glasses, I have the same problem as you - I can't see dates on coins any more. Here's a tip and something I've started doing.....I always hated seeing people wearing eye glasses on a strap around their neck, but after searching for an losing mine soooo many times I have resorted to the "dork" look and will wear mine on a strap now. This is especially handy when detecting as you will have them right there - just put them on when you need them - let them drop around your neck while you're hunting....you don't have to put them in your pocket or pouch where they can either break or get lost.

Thanks again for your kind comments about finding that cob (I was a little surprised that so few replied to that thread for such an old coin) - I felt like a putz when I came to the realization that it was probably a copper cent that someone had pounded - and then the reverse feeling when Eric in RI ID'ed as a Spanish Maravedis cob - heck I've yet to find a Spanish Reale. The story that thing could tell would be amazing and now the fun begins on trying to ID all of the counterstrike variations, etc.

Feel good about that coin/token in the bezel - I'm sure it'll turn out to be one of your sweeter finds - it is gorgeous (and you have many)!

Thanks "Cousin Mike"

Hope you have been getting some hunt time in. This summer has been a crazy one for me...and hunt time has been very scarce.

Sweet finds bryce!!!!!!! Congrats on the silver and getting a little help!!!! LOL

Thanks DoubleD. If it wasn't for the help of my saggy shorts-wearing buddy....I would have never gotten to hunt that day.:clapping:

He also came up with the permission to hunt the house...so he came through big time.

We can't let that happen too awful much:crylol:
You would have done the same thing for me Bryce...and as us fat guys say..."We got 'er done". :bouncy:

Good post and good story Bryce. I always enjoy reading them. I'm surprised Darrell's shorts stay up at all. One of these days there's going to be 2 moons on the horizon:crylol:
I have been pretty busy too but will get ahold of you guys if and when I can line up a couple of sites.
Good finds you and the Yeti had too. He can come along sometime too. He and Darrell hunting together might be a handful.
