300 + Year old Silver Coin with Omega

I have been hunting near a 500 year old castle and have been pulling coins pre 1900. The Nice big silver hammered is a 1678 Brandenburg Ansbach 1/6 Thaler. My oldest coin by just over a hundred years! It is worth around 75 Euro, my best find yet. It looks like new, but I destroyed any patina it had. I won't do that next time. I also found two Kreuzers, which are also silver & one of which has a small whole for safe keeping in the middle. How many times have we seen that? Silver coins are rare for me. The hammered is my first. Most coins were 3"-5" and the hammered was around 6"-7" and rang pretty good. I dug the minni's anywhere from 1" to 5" and they rang at 60 ish.

Anyway, The omega w/ 11"DD was running fully open, discrim usually at 1 and as high as 16. The GB was around 60. I used mode d2 and checked all targets in d4. The coins almost always had a nice clear ring in d4, where as trash would usually break up. The coins are actually in good shape, bu pretty plane and covered in green from the copper content. The area has quite a few metal detectorists I'm told. It is full of iron, really bad for the most part. Half of my targets were in or around iron I'd say. But I mostly got 4 way signals.

I also found that ring and it fits my ring finger perfectly. It looks like it's a few hundred years old. The little thing to the right of it has a part of a chain attached. Seems like its some kind of old button. And below that is a button. There's a crushed ring in the bottom left corner and above that is some kind of old pin with a plain face. In the upper right corner is a Coin issued from the government during the depression to get food, had a value of 20 Marks.

Overall the Omega performed really well and it's tricking me less with iron these days. Still the T2 was better in that regard but the Omega is better for coins so I'll take it. The ground was really wet, had just rained when the Omega was going nuts in the iron. But it was still performing, just tricking me a bit more than usual.

OMG.. what a beautifull coin mate, congrats!! If I ever find something like that I'll be shocked for months :stretcher:

Thanks guys. I have to say, the few silver coins I've found (4 or so) all have one thing in common. They all appear almost uncirculated. I've been searching for that coin online and the best I've come across is in condition half as good. It's hard to believe a coin could be in such good condition but there was no farmer tilling the fields as they do in England and the mineralization on my detector had no bars. Lucky me. I might have to carry it around as a good luck charm.

The story of the King is interesting. He was thrust into kingship before his time, he was still in his twenties, but due to his fathers death he had to be king. But there was a small circle of advisors helping him. He only lived to 31 anyway as smallpox got him. I should remember all of his story as it is a part of the coins history no doubt.

Forgot to say, my neighbor thinks the ring may be medieval due to it's design and composition. Maybe it's bronze. Have to find out and clean it up accordingly.

Well done on finding your first hammered.
There is a great feeling to that moment. ( i still remember my first ).

Yes it's a wise move to leave the lovely patina on them, they look too new without it.
Dont worry if you handle it a bit, most of the patina will return.
Good luck finding your next one.

I mean it Bud that would blow my mind to dig a coin Dated in the 1600's.

Over hear especially in my North Georgia are early 1800's pushes the limit...
I have only dug one 1700's coin and it was a 177? Spanish 2-Reale...So I dont even think about breaking into the 17th century...

One more time AWESOME:surprised:

Thanks again guys,

Furious T - yes I went out for 4.5 hours yesterday but no more hammereds. I think they will be a rarity here in Germany? But I did get 6 coins from the 1800's. One small silver. My best day for old coins.

Dioramix - That is a great looking coin. I hope I come across another and will leave the patina on like you. Seems like the Brits got us all on hammereds, But, time will tell!

Keith - Thanks. You know I know what you mean. I'm from America as well and it is shocking to find old things all the time here. But, that said, out of hundreds of coins, many fairly old, 5 or so of them are silver! You guys in the states have us Germans beat. (BTW - My neighbor found things from before Christ! That set me straight!)
