4 foot cut +beach+15 wot= question

hi all went to the beach with the explorer + the 15 inch wot coil ( thanks snowy love it ) yesterday and saw a site all beach hunters love to see a big cut disappearing of into the distance. i was just standing there thinking about all the gold & silver i was going to get for about 15 min after 2.5 hours of hunting reality set in no gold no silver  but on the bright side i wont have to buy a fishing sinker for 50 years 33 all up and a bit of gas money $7.85. now for the question because of the cut most of the targets where just under the surface and the wot was having problems picking them up these where 3 ounce lead sinkers so should be giving a good signal but all i was getting was very faint or choppy signals ????? i was having no problems with the deep ones just with the shallow targets.
i was thinking if i was having trouble with a 3 ounce sinker i"d have no chance with a gold ring ???? any suggestions explanations.
thanks lazyaussie

What was your sensitivity set at?......tell me your exact set up with what machine......and post a pick of the BIG CUT!!!!! I want to see and dream too...:bouncy:

I've got to run my sensitivity down to around 15 or 16 when using my 15" WOT coil at the beach, in deep mod . I hope this helps.

hi mattockman exp II all metal, man sensitivity18-20 running stable, gain 7, and thinking about it deep on which i should have turned off ( to busy thinking about gold ).
sorry no pics wife had cam. got pics of kids, sea, shells, birds, crabs, sky, seaweed, boats but missed the most important the cut ha ha.
if i remember rightly i had this problem with the exp XS as well with the standard coil. if the target was less than 1 inch deep it was hard to pick up or go all choppy.
thanks

I turn deep off if I get a lot of falsing......but your set up is ok...I have never had that happen to me before....do you hear the threshold tone while going over a shallow or surface object? Are you in advance mode....smartscreen/with screen cleared in select? or using Iron mask wide open?.....I am baffled....did you try smacking it against a tree, sometimes that helps if it is acting up! .......dang thing......you got me......???

That is not an uncommon problem on the beach, the Explorer can behave strangely in a few situations and near surface quarters or larger targets on a beach is one of those. Raise your coil a few inches off the sand when you get those. The best Explorer beach coil is a later SE coil, it's waterproof and less problematic in this situation, in fact I dug a boat load of shallow quarters with it and don't recall having ever had this problem. I did have this problem with both the WOT and stock XS and II coils though.

i had qickstart on with smart screen clear iron mask at -16 so i can hear all metal and have no masking of good targets.
there was a bit of black sand and a lot of iron on the beach. this would not normally be a problem as there is a layer of loose sand on most Beach's and the targets are deeper.
i tryed lifting the coil but the target would disappear both in pinpoint and in detect mode so i"d scrape some sand away with my foot to get a better signal and see a sinker ???
thanks for helping

I have never had this problem....but then again if it doesn't sound off from a shallow or surface coin then How would I even know it then? My Stock XS coil was toast after putting in water anyways....but I used the 7.5 and 12 inch sunray and the WOT and never noticed any problems except for falsing a ton on the 2 bigger coils.....the 7.5 is solid as a rock......I just got the new SE pro coil......what a pleasure that coil is......I have yet to take it to the beach...but I will next time I go......in dirt it is like a small coil put into a larger coil.....I need to test for depth before I comment on its depth......but I am very pleased with its ability in trashy areas......dang!

I won't address the WOT/signal question, but I will address the cut: If you were getting fishing sinkers, then there was a distinct possibility that there could have been gold rings there, since gold rings and lead sinkers have about the same density/weight. Mother nature frequently groups them together. But I have seen certain beaches near me, where fishing is a really big thing, and swimming is not. In other words, the ring ratio would be poor to begin with, and the lead ratio high to begin with. On those beaches, I don't get excited when I start finding lead. But if I was at a touristy clean non-fishing beach, and started getting lead, I'd bear down for a vicious attack :)

As for the cut in general, it would depend on the specifics of the particular beach, where the cut was, etc... Not all "cuts" are good. They can be 1) cuts in sterile sand (sand just built up during the calm of the previous months, and not cutting into true older sand). 2) Cuts that have been there for awhile, and sterile sand is already starting to come back in at their base. These cuts can sometimes look impressive, but they're older, and have either already been hit, or sand is coming back in and you're too late. 3) Cuts at river/ditch channels. If you're looking at a cut where a water swath (like city storm sewer outlets) continually cut channels all the time, they won't be as good (or not good at all), as a true surf carved cut.

It wasn't too long ago when I discovered this great cut just off a surf lifesaving club and across from a high school. Pulled out 50+ coins in a matter of hours. Only problem is that there were also rusting pieces of an old pier spread all over the beach. Slowed me down a bit but overall it was a great day...gotta love good targets just sitting on top of the sand. I was using my ExpII with a WOT coil.

cheers...Keith

hi tom it should have been a good beach when i was detecting 100 + people walked past and in the summer its a popular swimming spot. hopefully next time i"ll get the gold.
