The day that almost ALL Deus users finally arrived yesterday - the long awaited firmware update to v4.0 finally came down the pike courtesy of XP!!!
I got out to the park with the same settings as I used with v3.2 - and wanted to see what if any difference I'd notice while using 4kHz for deep coins. My first impressions of the update are positive - seems like coins are more accurately IDed at depth, something that was not a strong suit with v3.2 in any frequency. If the target was 5-6" deep or more, you would get a good "dig me!" signal but no accompanying VDI, which pushed me to learn Full Tones these last 3-plus years.
Another difference I noted was that the new version picked out co-located coins and nails more efficiently - last night I dug only 6 coins but 5 of them were co-located with deep iron within 2" of the coins. The audio on such a target wasn't ideal, but it was enough to spark my curiosity and dig! I would call that a significant step in the right direction! Beavertails and crushed foil balls are still a nuisance, I'm not sure there's anything to be done about those little rascals except dig them up and get em out of the way!
First "good" target was a surprise - not far from where I dug an 1864 Indian a few weeks ago I got another tiny signal, surrounded by some clutter. At only 7" deep I would find my first Civil War token - a Princess Head variety! This was "minted" in 1863 and is my oldest coin find from this location just edging out the 1864 Indian cent....
First coin to get dug yesterday was a lonely 1906 Indian, but in the hole with the coin were two very rusted nails. The signal for this coin wasn't anything special, sounding like a beavertail, but not even 3" away there was another small hit and from the 7" level out comes a 1925 S Mercury dime! After getting this out the Carrot was still sounding off in the hole, and yet another rusty nail would come from the same depth although just a little offset....
Pulled two sharp Indians from the depths dated 1887 and 1883. First coin to come out was 9" deep, and re-checking the hole proved to be a deeper Indian hiding under the first one at a solid 10" deep! Then a little deeper yet was another rusty nail! I was very impressed that the software picked these two out - the audio on this target was very faint and scratchy too.
Not two feet from the Indian duo I would get a tiny but consistent signal - and would be surprised to find a superb 1906 D Barber dime...in the hole with ANOTHER RUSTY NAIL! This dime was 8" down and the nail was an inch below the coin...
I only have a few hours' experience with the new firmware but I must say...so far it's a winner! Reactivity seems to be more efficient - I stayed in Reactivity 2 the entire time, and sometimes toggled to an adjacent 8kHz program, also in Reactivity 2, but this program proved to be a little too sparky - but I know for sure it hits deeper on almost all targets! 4Khz does a bang-up job with most iron, and somewhat ignores the small aluminum pieces at depth that the other frequencies LOVE!
It will take a little time to get the most out of v4.0 but IMHO the biggest "Take Aways" from last hunt are:
1. Much more reliable VDI on all targets, especially at depth
2. Reactivity is more efficient enabling better unmasking, especially at depth
3. The Deus runs much quieter over "hunted out" ground, which better contrasts the "iffy" hits from ground noise and deep iron
4. EMI susceptibility is about the same
5. Folded beavertails are still public enemy #1
