4kHz V4.0 First Impressions!

The day that almost ALL Deus users finally arrived yesterday - the long awaited firmware update to v4.0 finally came down the pike courtesy of XP!!!

I got out to the park with the same settings as I used with v3.2 - and wanted to see what if any difference I'd notice while using 4kHz for deep coins. My first impressions of the update are positive - seems like coins are more accurately IDed at depth, something that was not a strong suit with v3.2 in any frequency. If the target was 5-6" deep or more, you would get a good "dig me!" signal but no accompanying VDI, which pushed me to learn Full Tones these last 3-plus years.

Another difference I noted was that the new version picked out co-located coins and nails more efficiently - last night I dug only 6 coins but 5 of them were co-located with deep iron within 2" of the coins. The audio on such a target wasn't ideal, but it was enough to spark my curiosity and dig! I would call that a significant step in the right direction! Beavertails and crushed foil balls are still a nuisance, I'm not sure there's anything to be done about those little rascals except dig them up and get em out of the way!

First "good" target was a surprise - not far from where I dug an 1864 Indian a few weeks ago I got another tiny signal, surrounded by some clutter. At only 7" deep I would find my first Civil War token - a Princess Head variety! This was "minted" in 1863 and is my oldest coin find from this location just edging out the 1864 Indian cent....

First coin to get dug yesterday was a lonely 1906 Indian, but in the hole with the coin were two very rusted nails. The signal for this coin wasn't anything special, sounding like a beavertail, but not even 3" away there was another small hit and from the 7" level out comes a 1925 S Mercury dime! After getting this out the Carrot was still sounding off in the hole, and yet another rusty nail would come from the same depth although just a little offset....

Pulled two sharp Indians from the depths dated 1887 and 1883. First coin to come out was 9" deep, and re-checking the hole proved to be a deeper Indian hiding under the first one at a solid 10" deep! Then a little deeper yet was another rusty nail! I was very impressed that the software picked these two out - the audio on this target was very faint and scratchy too.

Not two feet from the Indian duo I would get a tiny but consistent signal - and would be surprised to find a superb 1906 D Barber dime...in the hole with ANOTHER RUSTY NAIL! This dime was 8" down and the nail was an inch below the coin...

I only have a few hours' experience with the new firmware but I must say...so far it's a winner! Reactivity seems to be more efficient - I stayed in Reactivity 2 the entire time, and sometimes toggled to an adjacent 8kHz program, also in Reactivity 2, but this program proved to be a little too sparky - but I know for sure it hits deeper on almost all targets! 4Khz does a bang-up job with most iron, and somewhat ignores the small aluminum pieces at depth that the other frequencies LOVE!

It will take a little time to get the most out of v4.0 but IMHO the biggest "Take Aways" from last hunt are:

1. Much more reliable VDI on all targets, especially at depth
2. Reactivity is more efficient enabling better unmasking, especially at depth
3. The Deus runs much quieter over "hunted out" ground, which better contrasts the "iffy" hits from ground noise and deep iron
4. EMI susceptibility is about the same
5. Folded beavertails are still public enemy #1

I hunted a site today,,,was jaw dropping for me,,based on how much deus 2.0 and 3.2,,, and some other good detectors.had been in this site.

V4 lit up lower conductors using hot program 2.5 disc,,,smoking signals.

Hunted for around 3.5 hours in this one site. Best Inhave ever done here ever,,,mind you hunting on and off for 6 years.

I'm sold already on V4,,,not looking back ever.

what are your setting again CZ? i'd like to give them a try... as soon as the snow melts that is... hurry up and wait.... waited all this time for V4 and now a foot of snow...lol.... but I haven't rebuilt any programs just yet... so this one sounds like a good one to try...thanks for the great write up..

Sounds like a good day there. Can't wait to give 4.0 a try. I did revert one of my Deus back to 3.2 just so I can do some comparisons between the two. But like others, winter just keeps hanging in there. Keep us posted on your findings, both machine and dug.

Awesome work and great write up.
Now where's that Merc??

Nice report and congrats on the digs. I'm updating mine this afternoon but like everyone else stated, I also have to wait for about 14" of snow to melt. I have the perfect spot to run V4 through its paces. A spot I've pounded the last 5 years with the Etrac, CTX and recently the Deus. Well over 160 silvers and other goodies. Good luck with the new V4 everyone and I'll post up a report ASAP.

Nice write up with good details. Reports without clear understandable detail are useless. Good job

Thanks for taking the time to post the info. on 4.0 !

I encourage folks after loading 4.0,,,,using full tones ,,you try running disc like 3.2 version,,,,get ready to dig nails and iron,,,they will sound pretty good.
Instead,,set disc to -2.5,,, this setting makes 4.0 sound like 3.2,,,, and you will dig less iron,,,,4.0 rocks in iron pits.

Lower conductors like $1 gold coin,,,,should be shaking in itheir boots.

Did you have I'd norm on or off? I never ran it on in 3.2 but wondering how solid the Id is at depth. Mild soil here and I get great number id at all but the very deepest coins. Between the rain and freeze , I'm living vicariously through others.

Hi Ohio, I have been running mine with ID norm on, but read somewhere that it hurt depth. Don't see how it would hurt just the numbers are different. ID norm dose make it easier to remember the VDI's. When I upgrade mine to 4.0 I am going back to norm off,and see how I do.Might need to learn vdi all over again, hope not. Good luck if you find out about the norm on or off let us know.

Flint, on 3.2 I never even tried id norm on, I only hunt in 8 or 12 kz so remembering the numbers aren't an issue. But I've never switched back and forth on deep targets to see if there are any depth difference in norm on. Snows piling up here now so I look like a puppy staring out the window. Interested in your findings on this. Thanks

Here are the programs I was using for those interested:

4kHz...Sens 86...Full Tones...Disc 0.0...TX 3...Reactivity 2...Silencer 1...Audio Response 3...Overload 1...Notch 00-10, 98-99...Manual GB 80...Notch Ground 80-90

8kHz...Sens 86...5 Tones....Disc 0.0...TX 1....Reactivity 1....Silencer 2....Audio Response 4...Overload 1...Notch 00-30, 98-99...Manual GB 72...Notch Ground 78-90
Tone#1 120Hz 00-10...Tone#2 200 Hz 11-30...Tone#3 492Hz 31-50...Tone#4 993Hz 51-96...Tone#5 120Hz 97-99

Hope this helps someone!

CZ... i use full tones all the time. i don't know if i could do multi tones. what conditions do you use the multi tones? how does that help vs. full tones?
thanks

ID Norm is always off - I love the VDI spread in 4kHz for US coins, and the Full Tone component saves me from glancing at the screen! Now that the VDIs are more stable for deeper items there's less guesswork when digging....

The multi-tone program is specifically a ferrous/non-ferrous program for the deepest of targets - those that are way beyond the VDI capabilities (at least in our soil). I use this program in 8Khz since this frequency is most sensitive to deeper coins and other targets. I set Tone#4 to 51-96 in order to hopefully bypass some of the small aluminum - the bits of shallower foil are a "mid-tone" and anything more conductive gets assigned the higher tone

Haven't used the 8Khz program much because it hits EVERYTHING, including deep iron. 4kHz is still the clear winner when trying to determine deep coins vs deep iron, and it is by no means perfect! Also the 8kHz program will light up small aluminum probably better than v3.2 with identical settings, but this also means it's more sensitive to gold as well!

I haven't tried Reactivity 1 settings with 4kHz - so many things to experiment with and then apply those results in the field - where sometimes all the experimentation in the world doesn't amount to a hill of beans once you set foot in a non-controlled area!
