I found this in knee deep water, it sounded like a couple of tabs...it was down a few scoops and I did not expect much..It was still very dark out, but I could feel the weight of this and walked back to my car to have a proper look...non magnetic...feels too damn heavy and smooth to be brass..still wasn't certain, so I just went on home and got out the acid...hit with 10k...hit it with 14...hit it with 18..still not any effect at all on it...as I was looking at the thing I found a few hallmarks and on two links .999...I'm done for the day..

I know! 999 in a chain? Who would have thought? The hallmarks are good, it passes 18k acid, its non-magnetic, but still, I'm taking it in to have it verified and appraised...believe me, in the darkness, I was thinking this cant be real, but the more I fondled it and felt its weight and silky smoothness, I had to just go home and have a look...by the way, the wife confiscated it....

Very nice piece you found!

Couple of guys I work with wear gold like that. For one of them it is a cultural / family savings thing. His grandparents immigrated from China. When his mother goes back to visit every couple of years she collects the gold chains she has given her children and upgrades them to thicker links. Her three children all have .999 gold chains; big heavy ones. It is her gift for them and a way to keep increasing the gifted "savings accounts" on each trip.

A jeweler I've had the discussion on soft metal with, recommends 14K for pronged stone mounts. Says he thinks 18K is too soft to properly hold a stone set in prongs. But for rings without stones or thick linked chains, with heavy hooking / interlocking types of clasps, if you want to pay for the purer gold, he will make it.
