9" 3 kHz Coil

New member
For those of you who have used this coil, do most bottlecaps give off a scratchy tone or do they tend to ring through as good targets?

This is assuming you are running in discrimination mode.

Thanks for your replies.

The response with 3kHz is such that you shouldn't dig any more crown caps.

And what is that response? What is it you hear of see on the ID that tells you it is a bottle cap?

It's not what you see, it's what you hear, an it doesn't sound like a good target.

Crown caps that have been exposed to the elements for a period of time will typically be rusty and sound scratchy (or the sound breaks up) when swept over rapidly. Especially when using the LF coils. In multiple tone modes, you can hear different pitches (harmonics) and subtle changes in tone. Crown caps that have been lost more recently and haven't rusted are tough for me to differentiate from a "solid hitting" target. Even more difficult when using MF or HF coils. JMHO HH Randy

Exactly!
And the more recent drops, being close to the surface, sound much too LOUD for the depth indicated. They can often be eliminated as potential targets by raising the coil, just as you do with soda can bottoms.
