A Big Silver Day

Being in my third week of retirement, I had not hunted during the week yet. A buddy and I have been going on the week-ends, but I've been doing other things during the week. This morning was different. For some reason, I had this feeling that I needed to go back to where we have hunted on the Saturdays of the last two week ends. It is a bean field now but reportedly was a fairground and picnic area in the past. Not to deny a gut feeling, I loaded up and away I went. 45 minutes later I arrived at the field. There was a 2 or 3 inch rain last night, but this field is sandy and drains real well in the area I "needed" to go to. I recovered a memorial cent on the way across the field, and for the next 45 minutes or so, nothing...I was beginning to think what a waste of time..I was getting hits on old shotgun casing butts, and pieces of crushed aluminum cans. This field floods at times and people must have came out here and shot skeet. I had been covering two rows at a time with no luck, so I had decided to go to another area of the field, after I worked a few more rows of beans. When all of a sudden I got a sweet sound in my headphones. The numbers were bouncing around a LOT, but were in the 1/38-40 area in one direction. I decided to dig, but figured it was the remains of a crushed can. After pin pointing I cut a 6-8 inch plug and flipped put the dirt. Nothing, after enlarging the hole another couple of inches the SunRay pinpointer sounded off on the side of the hole. I checked and there about 5 inches deep, and in the side of the hole and perfectly in the vertical position was the 1892 silver dollar!!! Now I'm not bummed out any longer!! Nothing else in the hole, so I continued down the row another 100 feet or so, then moved over and started heading back. After going 8-10 feet past where I got the silver dollar, I got a very solid and repeatable 1/40 signal. I thought no way...but carefully cut a 10 inch or so plug. removed the dirt and used the pinpointer in the hole. Nothing. I'm getting excited, because there are no aluminum chunks visible in the dirt from the hole. I used my hand to level out the dirt, and scanned the dirt with the coil. Still 1/40 and it's in the loose dirt!!! I rolled over a clump and I could see the thick rim of what turned out to be a 1896 silver dollar!!!...I had found these two silver dollars in about 10-15 minutes. I spent the next half hour going over this area from two different directions, but no other coins...I hunted for another couple of hours, and decided to head home. In that time I recovered a brass sleigh bell, a 1959 Rosie, an 1897 Indian (in very good shape, dark green patina all over and full Liberty in the headband), 3 wheaties, two clad quarters and 1 clad dime, along with an old steel "church key". WHAT AN EXCELLENT DAY!!!! I have always been a firm believer in going with "Gut Feelings" with this hobby. We had been over this area twice in the last two weeks, but somehow had missed these coins....I would rather be LUCKY than good, any day...

Don't think I've ever seen anyone pull two such nice silver dollars in the same day as well as all the other nice things you found. Sounds like you have a heck of a site there - wish I was closer to you! BTW, happy retirement!

Oh what a day !!!!!!!

Fab finds H. Looking at the difference in the wear on the portraits of the coins relative to the 4 years difference in age, suggests that they were lost around 1900.

I wonder how that kind of guessing relates to any history you have of the site?

That is one place you can go back to time and time again, and be surprised.....You can't ever say it's hunted out.....it's all down to chance and willingness to hang on in there.

Seasons, sunshine and storms, will all play a little magic, and reward you if you are diligent and patient.

I suggest once again, try a session in Ferrous audio. two tones, AND DIG ALL SIGNALS if you have just masked out iron. (Fe 35 to 30).

Well done.....................TheMarshall.

I know the feeling.....But I don't know double the feeling L.O.L.Congrats Man....

Thanks for the congrat.s to Erik, TheMarshall, and McNickle..I'm still having a hard time believing I found those two dollars..It was just one of those days..and I'm loving it...

TheMarshall...I've only used Ferrous sounds a very limited amount of time...however, it does sound like something I might give a try. The location of my finds has an extreme amount of shotgun shell butts, crushed aluminum cans, and in places lots of pull tabs and pop tabs. Does using two tones in Ferrous audio produce a higher pitch for silver than those mentioned junk items?? I still have some time before the soybeans make this field unhuntable until after the harvest. I just hope this no-till farmer at least chisels before planting next year...I have visions of what may lay in depths just out of range or are at such an angle that detecting the item is difficult. These are some of the things that make this an interesting hobby..you just never know what will pop out of the ground next! All I have found out about the history of this place, was that until recent years this field was a "fairground" and picnicing spot...It has been hunted over the years and I've been hitting it whenever possible, for just over a year..We have found Wheaties & Indians, V & buffalo nickels, Barbers, Mercs, and Rosies, along with modern pennies and clad. The unusual part was for silver, we had only gotten two coins larger than dimes (two 1930s Washington quarters) until today. I was talking about that last Sat. while we were hunting this same area. Thanks again for looking, happy hunting to all!!

Awesome! I don't think I've ever seen someone pull two silver dollars in one day (with the exception of caches). Very cool. I always go with my gut. Sometimes you just have a feeling about something. Maybe it's the power of positive thinking - thinking and knowing you're going to find something makes it happen. No matter how, you got the goods! Congrats! :clapping:

Thanks Nick...I just had the feeling that I really needed to go back to that place. I changed from my Platypus coil back to the Procoil when I got there. Since all the rain we've been getting, I had been doing fine with it, but I just wanted to see if there was a difference. It worked yesterday, but who knows if I would have done as good with the Platypus under those wet ground conditions...maybe. maybe not..it doesn't matter..things worked out fine.

You have been doing an awesome job yourself...Congrats

Man... Awesome day, congrats!! I think I would do some gridding an dig anything that sounded even remotely good ;)

Congrats on a very rare feat! Two Morgans in one day is unbelievable. WTG!!! I found one in two years, but wouldn't be surprised if I never find another one. I hope your site continues to pay off for you.

HH!

This a great story. For those of us who can't dig, reading something like this puts a smile on your face.

What an amazing find! LOVE looking at your Morgans! LOL!

I Know that got your heart racing. I got way lucky on my very first hunt with my E trac and found two silver dollars the first day I used it. We all know the gleam of silver in the hole feeling and seeing the edge of big Silver is the best. Mine came out dark and stayed dark...(they are on the fourm posted about 1 yr back) ... Great to see and read bout that.

Spring is comming!

That's it Awesome! Two Silver Dollars and more!... A good old post is worth revising!
Congratulations!
