A bit disappointed in Minelab

I never really did any side by side comparison tests. My SE worked good as far as depth, I think. As someone mentioned, maybe I have been expecting it to run like an EII. In that case I have been running it too hot, sensitivity wise. I did bump the gain down a notch, but using the Sun Ray 8" coil I usually have the sens. at 32.

My only beefs with the SE is that it falses off of iron too much and the Slimline is flaky. Using the SR8" coil I would get a nice "coin" high tone. Turning 90

First day couldn't talk; their phone system was intermittent. Second day didn't get Sandy but was passed on to repair dept. Person I talked with said to send the coil back and they would check it. When I asked for his name, he gave me someones else name. I guess he thought better and then gave me another name. Some how I don't feel too confident about sending it to Vegas. John R

I sent a Quattro one time with good results. My XS is on it's way now. I think their service is top notch. I did have some trouble with first Texas one time.

I have used the Explorer SE all this season. Yes the first two machines I had were defective and yes even the SE slimline coil on my current (3rd) SE is a falsing useless lump of epoxy which never leaves the closet but the machine itself is quite good. I have been using an Explorer II coil on my SE and have made lots of good finds. That said a friend of mine Bruce has an SE and his slimline coil seems to work just fine, hunting along side me he has made many good finds also. This season I concentrated mostly on east coast beaches which have ample amounts of rusty nails. Add saltwater and black sand and I feel this has been a challenging test environment for the SE.

Results: With the SE I dug a heaping pile of silver coins and jewelry plus 16 gold rings and other assorted gold jewelry this year including a 1+ carat diamond ring. That's not great compared to some of the more experienced beach hunters but for me it's fantastic.

SE performance: I routinely dig very small targets in the 1/4 inch range and VERY deep targets on the beach in the 12-24 inch range. The deepest targets this year were silver quarters and halfs, the two walking halfs I dug in NJ recently were rediculously deep so I feel the SE is performing quite well. The deepest signals were faint mind you but repeatable.

I did NOT have to change any of my settings. I have always run my Explorers on the hot side and I use the same settings on the SE that I use on my other Explorers and in terms of stability and performance the SE is just as good as my other Explorers.

I will say without hesitation that I like the SE. Maybe I will send in my SE slimline coil and get a new one. I would love if I could find a good slimline coil because unlike the Explorer II coil the slimline is waterproof.

Finally as to the number of people who had problems with their SE early in the year, there were quite a few. Obviously nobody wants to come on here and bash Minelab in public so most of this was handled off-line. I tend to agree with a previous post that given the fact that nobody is complaining these days Minelab has probably addressed the issues.

That's my two cents worth.

Thank you! I have been needing some reassurance that I am not just setting the thing up too hot or something. I really appreciate that. It went to ML repair Wed. I guess they have heard of this problem before. Hope I don't have to go through more than two to get a good one.

If you don't mind, what are your serial numbers for the SE and Slimline (the ones that work good)? My coil was in the 5,000s. Would have to check on the SE number.

Take care and HH - BF

Charles,
Now that you have an SE that works to your expectations, do you think that it handles iron better than previous models? If so do you think it is the faster processor or what.
Thanks - BF

QUOTE NH BOB>"With 115 post to your credit, you should know by now that I am not a basher or a masher or what ever. I've owned more Minelab products than you will ever own. There were other changes, and good ones to boot. But we ar not talking machine. We're talking."

Bob-- I don't really understand what the amount of posts from any individual on any forum has to do with anything other than prove who spends more time on their computer... You know what I mean?

You know Bob? Over the years I've probably watched the video from 1969 of Neil Armstrong taking his first step onto the moon, hundreds if not thousands of times... Does that make me any smarter about space travel than anyone else?

Bob, you're not talking coil here! You're talking trash!

Just because you've bought and sold just about every machine on the market in the past year or so, doesn't necessarily convince me that you're such a smart guy at all...

I'm sorry if this seems a little mean Bob, but for crying out loud.. Enough all ready!

All the best,
JAB

When I read that post about the 115 posts.....that is how I interp. it as in he has been on here long enough to know...not as in not enough.....so if he got his undies all in a knot then so be it....you can't help the way he thinks...I would just move on and let it go....this forum is fun and informative to stop posting....I hope you reconsider Bob....:minelab:

That was quite clearly a slap down, translation, "shut up". This is nothing new, some guys just have a need to be recognised and looked up to as some sort of expert or detecting god, its a pecking order thing. That's human nature I suppose.

Reality is that a guy who may have only purchased his first Explorer yesterday could very well learn something about the machine none of us yet know. I have seen it time and again so I listen carefully to other peoples field observations regardless. I learned a few things on my own, the rest from paying attention to others.

We know that a rusty nail can cast quite a shadow masking other targets nearby. Thinking about I would say that this shadow is smaller with the SE. Whether that is due to the faster processor and/or other changes ML made I can't say.

Here's something else. I'm up somewhere near the 2,000 targets dug with the SE now, enough to begin noticing patterns and one thing I have noticed beach hunting is that it seems easier to miss targets with the SE than with say the XS. Depth and target orientation seem to be a factor in this. I still pick up some targets well off to the side of my coil, sometimes rediculously like a coil width away. Yet other times I miss a clad quarter by only a couple inches and barely get a hit or miss it altogether and find it when I make my overlapping pass back the other direction. So I'm being more careful now to detect a tighter grid.

I will take my 7+ year old XS out tomorrow, weather and health permitting and hunt for a few hours, with the same unit that still has original COIL and never returned to ML other than to get the cracked housing replaced which plagued the vast majority of early XS machines.

My 2 wishes for the New Year, that one year from now I can say I am going out tomorrow with my 8+ year old XS or that maybe I can say I am going out with my new SG Explorer! (SG for SUPER GOOD). :)

You would think it would be, the less Mine Lab's you go through, the more you learn the one that you seriously put the time into; otherwise any Schmuck on Ebay would be our go to Guru.
