A coin I have never seen before......can anyone help?

I was able to hunt a property that was built in the early 1800's and the old coins were popping. almost zero mordern trash and very little clad. (only six for the day) I was banging the old coins though. The first pic is the silver. You can see the dates clear in the pics. The next is two large cents I though one was 1807 and the other 184? They are pretty banged up. I got 7 Indians for the day 1908,1905,1901,1899,1876,1875, 1858. I also got a Vnick 1908. The large copper is 1731 (My oldest coin with a clear date). I got this at a measured 10.5 inches. I think this brings my total to 35 coppers for the year. It was past the dark soil and into the blondish yellow soil. FOR ALL YOU NEWER E-TRAC GUYS.........I was in auto +3. Running at18- 22 Don't think you have to have crazy settings or you will miss the coins... the E-trac will find them if they are there.

check the date again on the 1858 indian, because the indian series started in 1859..........in 1858 the pennies were flying eagles. You had a superb day! congrats on the super finds

:clapping: Let's hope it is an 1858 Indian. There are 6 varieties of the 1858 Indian and all are rare...they are prototypes for the new design, Judd varieties. Almost all our coinage has earlier versions of each accepted designs. You should see of the proposed issues :lol:
 
hey that looks like the rare 1858? you might want to have that checked by a coin dealer before you do anything to it,like coinut said they are super rare!
 
Good finds Dan, I looked in the USA coins red book and did not see the coin..could the x mean ten in roman numerals? Nice coins

I'd like to try to help you out with the unknown coin. To do so, it would be really helpful if you could post what ever inscriptions you can read from both obverse and reverse.

I will try to answer your questions.........Nope, not a 1858 Indian. It is definitely a 1868. I was in a hurry to post and only cleaned the coins a little by rubbing some olive oil on the and just the date area. I looked quick without a magnifier. you have to look close, it still kinda looks like a 5 but is definitely a 6.

As far as settings go I was using two tone ferrous smooth sounds. deep-off, fast-on, trash high and ground difficult. My disc pattern is shaped like a "C" I was in auto + 3 and that would range from 18-22 sens.

Capt SE was right on the ID...it is a brazilian 10 reis....thanks Capt.

As far as the location goes....nothing too special about it (for these parts anyway) Early 1800's house and barn. I have to say though that I usually do not do this well at old houses. It was a rare treet for me. There was very little modern trash and the trash I did find was period. I found a pocket watch, a toy gun that had the date 1854. An old skeleton key that probably went to the house. some horse tack and some buttons. I left that stuff for the owners of the house. I am hoping that they let me go back.

One of the coolist things that I found was ants that smell just like lemon pledge. There were dark winged ones and what looked to be like youger ones that were a pale yellow color. at first I thought they were termites. a couple were crawling up my hand and I smooshed them. I could't believe how strong they smelled. It was a very pleasant smell though. the darker ones didn't smell good.
