A few finds from my 6/10,11,12/10 hunts.

Well.....I figured I best get these finds up and posted that I found these 2 different outings so let's get to it.

Thursday, the 10th, a friend of mine named Loren called me (which uses a Garrett Ace 250) about 7:00pm or so and asked what I was doing. I wasn't doing much and he wanted me to come over to do some detecting with him where he lives. He lives in an apartment and we have hunted it before revealing a few Indian Heads, Wheats, a Silver Quarter and a couple Silver Dimes. I said sure.....why not since he mentioned something about possibly hunting some boulevards across the street from where he lives also. Well.....we only hunted around his apartment but we had a little fun none the less. Loren didn't find anything old for coins but he did find his first pocket spill of coins which was all clad. He dug a few Quarters, Dimes, a Nickel or 2 and a few Pennies as well in 1 hole which got him excited. I never asked him how much he found but it had to be close to $2 worth. As for me I didn't get too much but did manage to pull a 17 Wheatie and a North Dakota State Seal Pendant which is quite old. I've found one of these years ago so now I have 2 of them in my collection. Maybe next time I will ask the owner across the street if Loren and I can hunt his boulevards. His kid has a cheap Bounty Hunter and only finds clad with it but I know what is hiding on his boulevard and yard itself....Barber! Rick(ND) searched this years ago with a Compass I believe and found a few Barber Dimes so if he found those then with that kind of technology then there has to be more still waiting to be found so I will have to make sure to ask next time I see the owner.

Friday, I had to run over and visit my sister in Lamoure, N.D. and bring her a TV and a few other things. I visited with her for a few hours and then decided to go try somewhere in town for an hour. I decided to try over by some Older Tennis Courts since Tim had found some Silver and Wheats here a few years ago. I hunted this for an hour and only found 3 Wheats but did get a surprise Injun dated 1904 from here. I also got an Olympic Pin from '88 as well. Then I headed home.

Saturday.....I picked up Tim since he hadn't been out for an entire month and decided to go check out a different Fairgrounds this time with him. We were suppose to meet up with a friend of mine named Denny and his wife and I had no idea if the Fairgrounds was going to be good or even what it looked like. Well.....we met up with them and Tim and I hunted for a couple hours with only a few finds. It was raining a bit but not bad and Denny didn't want to bring out his detector since he didn't have a Rain Cover on it but I had an extra with but he still decided to just watch and chat since we don't get to see each other much since he lives in St. Cloud, Minn. Anyways....his wife hunted a bit also but only found a few Clad Coins this time I believe. Tim ended up finding 3 Wheats and I got 2 Wheats with a couple modern Tokens. We then decided to go try somewhere else and Denny and his wife had to be getting back since they had things too do in the afternoon.

Well.....I decided to take Tim to the Fairgrounds where I had gotten quite a bit of Barber from and I figured it had to be close to worked out by now.........at least that is what I thought! Now....if I had known that there was still these finds still hiding here at this site I probably would have never taken Tim here since it seems like if there is some bigger Coins at sites.....he gets lucky and pulls them.

We started hunting over by the buildings first since Rich had told me that Dan and him couldn't find anything over in the area when they tried. Well.....I was hunting about 10 minutes and that is when my first Old Coins surfaced.....and it was a shocker for sure! First Coin pulled from this area turned out to be a 1911-s Barber Quarter!!! I was stoked since this was my first Barber Quarter for the year and it felt good to finally find one even though it was a bit worn but it was Barber and I didn't care. I hunted a bit more after I told Tim what I had found and pulled up a few Wheats and a Silver Rosie. Tim got a couple Wheats as well and then he decided to go try where I had found the last finds at.

I hunted a bit more by the buildings and only found Clad so I decided to go join Tim since I didn't want him to get all the goodies if there was any still there. Well....I started hunting over in an area where I had gotten some Barber Dimes from before and was walking and swinging at a good pace and then that's when I ran into a Deeper 28 Reading that I was hoping to find. Most all these had turned out to be Barber and it was going to stay this way. Dug it and out pop's Barber Dime #1. I covered the hole and did a search around the area and about 8' or so away got another good hit that read the same. Dug it and Barber Dime #2. I then went over and told Tim I had just pulled 2 Barber Dimes. I then asked if he was finding anything? He replied he had found an Injun, a Wheatie or 2 and a Barber Dime as well. I thought that was pretty good and for some reason didn't think he would find much more....at least where he was hunting at since it seemed like the ground had been turned before or moved around. Well.....I should have thought just the opposite and I'm still kickin' myself for not hunting over in that area where he was since I might have found the targets he found. Well.....I went back and started hunting where I found the Barber at and only found a Wheatie or so and then decided to go try over in an area what I had already somewhat gone through but not thoroughly. Rich had been working this a bit so I didn't get to hunt the area much. Anyways....I was swinging along and got a short blip that was higher pitched. I went back over the target and it was one of them Warble-Sounding Targets where you can get a Signal but it's all distorted and is all over the Signal Range of the Detector. I decided to dig it since the Target seemed to stay in the same spot when I swept the Coil over it at a faster pace. I dug down and at a good 10-11" Deep......out pop's a Silver Dime. I pick it up and it's a 26 Merc. I re-check the hole and nothing so I cover it up. I start detecting again and about 6' or so away get another Warble-Sounding Target like before and it stayed in the same location so decided to dig it also. I dug down and at about the same Depth out pop's a Silver Roosevelt Dime! I then realized what probably was going on......the ground had to have been moved around making these so Deep. Then if this is true I can only imagine what is even Deeper in the ground......Barber and Seated!!!! I hunted a bit more with only one other shallow Coin find which turned out to be another shocker.......a 1936 Washington Quarter that was probably 2" in the ground!

I then decided to go see how Tim was doing and about this same time a fellow stopped by that had hunted here before with a White's and had found that Walking Liberty Half and a few Wheats a few weeks before. He asked if I had found much and I told him a few things. I then told him where I had found some Barber and Injuns and he went over in the area's to see if he could find more. I thought to myself.....why in earth would you go over there but I guess he just doesn't realize that a White's 5900d isn't a Minelab and that a Minelab will go Deeper than the White's but I guess here at this site you don't need Depth....you need to get between Targets and dig every good hit. Anyways.....I went over and told Tim I just dug an Injun, a Silver Quarter, Merc, and Rosie. I then asked if he had found anything else and he said yes. He then told me that he had found 2 more Injuns, 3 or so Wheats and a 1898 Barber Quarter that was between 2 Junk Targets. Tim uses the E-Trac and it was doing well this day for him. He then mentioned he had 2 Targets for me to check out.....both reading like Halves!!! I went over the first Target and it locked on Quarter. I told him this and he dis-agreed. I dug it for him and it turned out to be an Aluminum Top to something....about the size of a Half Dollar. The second Target I swung over and it read Half no doubt in my mind looking at Smart-Find. He told me to dig it but don't hit it!!! I dug a bigger Plug and popped it loose. Loosened up some dirt and then that's when I seen it come up on edge! I reached in and pulled it up and seen the back....Barber!!!! I told him it was a Barber and flipped it over. 1900-s with almost all of Liberty showing on the headband. He then starts yelling yaaaahhhhhh!!! and the fella with the White's comes running over. He talked to Tim before he started hunting and told Tim he was the only one to find a Half here but not anymore. Tim wasn't going to tell him or show him what he found but I told him too. He comes over and I told him not to rub the Coin and he said he knew that. Tim drops it in his hand and he was in shock. The fella just couldn't believe that Tim had found a Half and that it was a Barber as well but there it was in his hand. He then got excited himself and started hunting more. Well.....by the end of the day Tim found a couple more Wheats and 2 more Injuns. I didn't find too much more but a few Wheats. The fella with the White's didn't get anything old for Coins but did get a Gold Plated Sterling little Pendant. Then Tim and I headed to get gas and Tim said he was paying for the gas since he found the Half. Damn right he was!!!! We then shot over to Burger King and he payed for the food as well. All in all it was another great hunt but I just wish it would have been my Coil to have found that Half that day. Oh well.....you can't get them all!

Here's the totals for finds on these 2 hunts. Silver Total was 7 Silver and they were 1 Barber Quarter dated 1911-s, 1 Washington Quarter dated 1936, 2 Barber Dimes dated 1903,1905, 1 Mercury Dime dated 1926 and 2 Silver Roosevelt Dimes dated 1946 and 1957. For Indian Heads...only 2 surfaced and they were dated 1900 and 1904. 14 Wheats were found as well and they were dated 09(no V.D.B.),17,(2)20,20-d,30,37-d,(3)40-d,46,48-d,51-d and 55-d. For Misc. I found 6 Modern Tokens, an Aluminum Double Heart without any inscription on it, an '88 Olypmic Pin, a Senior Pendant from '91, a Dog Tag without a Date, a small Red Bead and the State Seal Of North Dakota Pendant. All in all it was another successful couple hunts and hope you have enjoyed yet another of my stories and posting of finds. Thanks for looking and hope your search coils find a few goodies for you as well. Best of Luck and HH to you all![attachment 165657 DirtySilver.jpg][attachment 165661 CleanedSilver.jpg][attachment 165662 DirtyPennies.jpg][attachment 165664 CleanedPennies.jpg][attachment 165666 DirtyMisc..jpg][attachment 165667 CleanedMisc..jpg]

Thanks for the nice read as well as some excellent finds. That's a great story about your buddy finding a Barber half. Really enjoy your posts and happy hunting!

Nice finds James.:clapping: Gotta love those old fairgrounds. Too bad that barber quarter wasn't a 1901s, but still a sweet find. Got back from our trip Monday and all I have to show for it is web feet and moss on my back. It rained every day except for the day that we were coming back home. Great stuff once again James and good luck on your next trip. HH.

Great finds James. Money is tight here so this year I'm having to go back over old ground. I'm surprised at the things I left behind.HH and GL.

sometimes all it takes is running into a good ole Park or other site and swinging the coil to make finds like the ones I have made on my outings. Other times it takes a bit of research since there is a lot of spots out there that have been hunted hard yielding very few keepers and if you find a spot no-one has hit yet, then it can be a very fun and rewarding outing.

You must also learn your detector which is the key to being successful.....know what it's telling you.....and know which targets could be good from the bad targets that can be iron falses and such. The more time you spend outdoors at older sites and the more targets you dig the better you will get at distinguishing which targets are the good one and which are the bad ones. Some targets when deeper will not read as if they were closer to the surface and also can read different if next to Junk or Iron and even if the target is sitting in the ground at an awkward position which will make the target id different. Ground Conditions will also effect the readings too. Rocky Ground can make for some choppy signals due to the minerals in the ground. Just depends what type of ground you have in your area which may effect the settings you use as well.

When I first started using my XS, I dug everything since I wanted to learn what each target was and I found a bunch of Old Pins and even dug a Seated Dime with 2 V-Nickels in the same hole once that read 15 on Digital.....just had me curious about what it could be since I didn't run into another target like that thus being rewarded for investigating it. You wouldn't think it would read that low but the Nickels were on both sides of the Dime which made the Dimes Conductivity Number Lower. So dig a lot of different targets to get use to whats in the ground and what the detector is telling you. You would hear a lot more targets if you were to run in Iron Mask Mode using -10 as a setting in Conduct Tones. You will also notice nulling from iron but you will know more due to this since you will be able to distinguish how much Iron is in the ground than Pulltabs, Screwcaps, etc. Using a Pattern can be good but I choose Iron Mask since then I know the amount of Iron versus the Conductive Targets.

Patterns can be used for Coins and be successful using it too but make sure not to build a Pattern too tight since then if a Coin is next to Trash or Iron, you may not be able to get a signal from it or a choppy signal thus you not digging the target and leaving it behind.

Main thing is to learn your detector and get the hours logged in using it. If you have problems, just Private Message me and I will try to help you out. I hope some of this helps and if you need any other info just PM me. Until next time.....Good Luck and HH with your Explorer XS.

surprising to go over old ground you once covered and find out that there is still keepers lurking about. It's always fun to hunt old sites where you know you got a bunch of goodies from and find a few more. Hope you can do a little traveling since your strapped for cash this year and if not, hope you find a few goodies in some of your worked sites. Might pull a key date from one of them........one never knows! Thanks again and Continued Success, Good Luck and HH to you.

Glad to bring you all along on my outings and hopefully gets many of you out the door and detecting more in search of good sites to detect. I'd post a pic of the Barber Half but will have to see if Tim will lone it too me......he'd probably think I would keep it! LOL!!! I'm sure the White's user is still hunting out there hoping to find one himself....you never know....there could be another somewhere. Thanks for the reply and Good Luck and HH to you on your next outing.
