I went to my local High school again todetect the lawn out front. I started hitting it again last week. While I was was there I met a guy whom drove up and said he was detect the localschools also. He said he was "harry's neighbor from the club." Now I have no issue with harry but as a long standing member and a detecting enthusist I said sure no problem. He went down the other end I continued working the area I was in near the parkimng lot.
There is plenty of grass for all to hunt. I finshd up about 30 mins laer and went down to see him. He had a large hole and some huge clumps of grass. But he said they will go back in with no problem.
Well today I was there and detecting as usual but I noticed several holes that HIS huge clumps were dead and the holes was quite evident.
Needless to say I will speak at the meeting and ask harry to speak to his neighbor. I do not wish to have a place I hunt start to kick us out because people do not take the time to learn to pinpoint and find the target with out digging the place up.
Before I left the area today I threw the dead grass in the trash and covered those areas as best I could.
Part of the problem here in this area is that it's very hard to water deep enough. Either the grass is all wet or the forst 2 onches is all that gets wet.
Also it irrated me that I found a dirty aluminum pull top lid like from an instant food that was dirty as though it had been buried. Kind of made me happy to find a few coins that were next to what looked like spots that somebody tried to recover a target but failed.
You may ask what do I use that I do not leave ruts and huge holes ?
The only tool I use is a 4-5" awl. It has a smallish handle and a shaft that is about 3/16 and I pinpont well enough to hit the coin. I do not even try to move the grass till I hit the coin.
Once I hit the coin I silde the awl a little past the coin and pull upward to make a kind of slot. I then insert my left pointer finger and use the awl to now get under the coin and pull the coin out.
Now for todays finds.
Quarters........17-----=$4.25
dimes----------11-----=$1.10
Nickels---------04----=$0.20
pennies--------30----=$0.30
------------------------------------
coins-----------71----=$5.85

i use a 6 inch skinny screwdriver while hunting parks and school yards. stab and grab-its the fastest and leaves the grass roots intact....happy hunting if you are allowed back....

I pull coins the same way, with a 6" screwdriver 1/4 shaft and my left pointer finger...after a few months they turn themselves into an awl just from pushing it down in the ground so often. Sorry to hear about that other guy..maybe have Harry show him how to stab a coin, and pick up all garbage he unearths?

Is it the coin count? I did it while laying hre on my back and typing on my netbook.
Should be 62 coins and same total I think...

Good hunt! Sorry to hear about the guy leaving a mess. Let us know if Harry has a talk with him.

Sloppy, disrespectful dectorists have been the scrouge of this hobby since I started back in the mid 70's.

I used to use a short military bayonet; but started getting paranoid that somebody might think I was a serial killer ! So, I migrated to a short Dandelion digger that worked well for years.
Recently started using a Leche (?) specialty tool that works well.
Honestly, I see some new videos with people out in a yard or park with mini shovels and I think W. T. H. ??? They should be relegated to farm fields and wood lots IMHO.
I would have been run out of places years ago if I was seen rooting around with one of them.

Matter of fact, I was asked to leave a fireman's park AFTER I got done filling in another guy's holes !!
The groundskeeper aplogized and said he was watching me several times, and was impressed with the care I took in filling in my holes (and others), but they had had a meeting and banned any more metal detecting because of the holes being left open by others.
It was a darn shame because the place was full of 30's,40's and 50's silver:rage:

I know they dont even check to see if its a suface target they start digging a 10" wide plug only to find out its on the suface , its a problem most targets can be poped out

I never quite got the hang of screwdriver digging. If I'm hitting a newer school and not worried about nicking an oldie I'll use my Lesche and dig a circular plug that is no wider than the blade and as deep as I can go (After checking the surface of course). If the target is in the plug all is good, and if it's not it can usually be popped out of the edge with the pinpointer and the tip of the Lesche. The plug goes back in the hole and you can't even tell I was there. If it's dry I don't hunt grass and if it's really wet I don't hunt it either.
