I went to my local High school again todetect the lawn out front. I started hitting it again last week. While I was was there I met a guy whom drove up and said he was detect the localschools also. He said he was "harry's neighbor from the club." Now I have no issue with harry but as a long standing member and a detecting enthusist I said sure no problem. He went down the other end I continued working the area I was in near the parkimng lot.
There is plenty of grass for all to hunt. I finshd up about 30 mins laer and went down to see him. He had a large hole and some huge clumps of grass. But he said they will go back in with no problem.
Well today I was there and detecting as usual but I noticed several holes that HIS huge clumps were dead and the holes was quite evident.
Needless to say I will speak at the meeting and ask harry to speak to his neighbor. I do not wish to have a place I hunt start to kick us out because people do not take the time to learn to pinpoint and find the target with out digging the place up.
Before I left the area today I threw the dead grass in the trash and covered those areas as best I could.
Part of the problem here in this area is that it's very hard to water deep enough. Either the grass is all wet or the forst 2 onches is all that gets wet.
Also it irrated me that I found a dirty aluminum pull top lid like from an instant food that was dirty as though it had been buried. Kind of made me happy to find a few coins that were next to what looked like spots that somebody tried to recover a target but failed.
You may ask what do I use that I do not leave ruts and huge holes ?
The only tool I use is a 4-5" awl. It has a smallish handle and a shaft that is about 3/16 and I pinpont well enough to hit the coin. I do not even try to move the grass till I hit the coin.
Once I hit the coin I silde the awl a little past the coin and pull upward to make a kind of slot. I then insert my left pointer finger and use the awl to now get under the coin and pull the coin out.
Now for todays finds.
