A Few More Sifting Finds

A good day of "boarding" and sifting at the incinerate site: (boarding is where you put a board out and look though material dumped on it). We did $60 in scrap copper and brass plus as shown a one ounce silver chunk of cigarette case, a quarter, three dimes, (one melted) a squashed ring, a sports pendant, a 1901 Indian Head and a 1910 Wheat cent. The two of us each got gold rings my friend got a quarter, six dimes, a silver crusifix, and a palm-sized Order of Elks standard in brass. My camera conked there so that stuff is not in the picture. I't amazing what comes up when you have old material and just plain look at a lot of it. Kind of like on "Bering Sea Gold"--get some dirt though the sluice and some gold in the box!

Facinating. Any chance you could post a few pics of the operation whilst hunting? Do you use water to clean up the stuff to help id it?

I was all set to get a few shots of us in full swing but my camera conked. Next time for sure. Basically we had a board on shore, each walked out to get good material--then put it in a bucket or store rack (like you carry groceries in) and walked it up to the board--out it goes, and we get in there and seperate / rinse it to look it over. Used to be some good sites on surface hunting that showed how to rig sifters with rope and an inverted "V" brace to sort material. For now the board and bucked system is working well. Site is producing Victorian era stuff we are hoping something really good will come out if we work the "dirt theory".
Good Luck,

Sure saving on batteries Clive!!

Old Timers have told me of watching two Hunters many years ago (before metal detectors) using shovels and a large sifter screen on popular dry sand beaches with good results.

I like your method better,

Had to be good sifting before detecting :)

Clive- cool stuff. I'm sure you're aware of all of the equipment that is out for your kind of searching. I'll just add a simple one that I've used for fossils. Clam rake with a smaller screen. Some of the Hotels near fossil beaches have them for guests. I made my own w tie wraps. Just a suggestion -looks like you are doing great.

I have a site by me on a creek-was an old store, Way too much iron for my MD. Surface finds-Indian trade beads, buffolo nickles,Barber coins, glass and colonial pipes. I've used a rake but next will be my fossil rake.

Thanks for the good read.
