I was out for a short hunt this AM because temps are hitting 50 today in NH.
As most of you know I have used the Explorers (3 now) to a point where I feel quite comfortable with them. Today as I was hunting I was in pretty clean ground and found myself swinging at a pretty good clip. (More so with the SE because of its faster response time) I was thinking about myself and other users of All Metal settings that have given a lot of helpful info to those who are interested in trying this setting. And I realized that none of us had touched on the audio response. When swinging at a faster than normal pace not all good signals come threw as good signals. Confused yet? I listen for any blip or tone change other than the iron drone. Stop and swing back over it a few times slower and that is when a masked or deep signal will expose itself. Of course there are the signals that jump right up and say here I am but you need to check every differential in the normal iron drone. If it sounds like I am repeating myself its because I am. Check all variations from the normal iron drone of hunting in All Metal.
Just my opinion of course.

You are right on with this information. Any time the ground is clean, or close to it, I run all metal or close to it with only the very upper left corner taken out (two small boxes in each axis, x,y). Further,in trash I will run a small discriminate custom pattern and check it with an open iron mask to hear the sounds (if any) around any good tone.

Being so new to the Explorer (SE) I have been trying to conjure up the best combination of settings/swing speed every site I try. One thing that seems to throw me off track though is "swing speed" I keep hearing LOW & SLOW... I don't have a test garden so I try this EVERY time I go out whether it's a new spot or a favorite park...When I get a deep type iffy, that I am PRETTY sure (51%) it's a good target, I'll try adjusting the sensitivity & differ my swing speed over the target to try & get the BEST signal I can...Now here is where I get thrown off...It SEEMS to ME that the faster I swing, (up to a point) the better response I get from the target...Let me explain...Say I'm covering a measured swath 6' wide...When I cover this in say 2 seconds compared with 4 I seem to get a MUCH better signal & if I slow WAY down & add another 2 sec. I may lose the signal altogether...I'm usually in deep, all metal running ferrous with sens. anywhere from 18-32 gain at 7 or 8... I know that in trashy areas I really have no choice but to slow down or use a pattern (which I haven't tried yet)but will soon...ANY COMMENTS??? TT
 
Being new to the Explorer I would say to use the speed that you are the most comfortable with which seems to be moderately slow. Deep signals, most times once you locate the target and pick up swing speed over it the tone becomes better on good metal and breaks up on trash or Iron. Big rusted iron makes a fool of everyone most times. This is a good speed as you are more apt not to miss any signals. As time goes by and you find yourself much more confident with the machine the speed of your swing will adjust itself along with you. In other words stay slow now and do what is working best for you and everything else will fall in place. Trust me when I say you will look back at all this and chuckle to yourself cause it ain't all that hard. I think the problem with most all new users of the Explorer is the unknown and that is normal.
 
I just happened to see a post I made about a month ago with a question:lmfao:...but yes I am doing what works best...at least what I think is working best at any given time...I went to Folsom lake earlier this week & managed to find a plated ring, Junk but a ring none the less...Only my second one...& was digging all signals except except hard iron hits...I think the parks & rec. dept. should allow me free access seeing as how I removed a large amount of trash off the beach, includeing a lot of very sharp pieces that could have seriously cut someone...anyway it looks like it stopped raining here so maybe I can hit the park across the street for a couple hrs.. This coming Sunday I'm gonna try capitol park again at the 00-29 thing, just for S#1t$ & giggles...see what pops up...TT
 
threads like this. It is good info to know as it gives me the details I need to make informed decisions on purchases.

Bob a question if you please, when rechecking those tone changes for proper ID how do you find that the Explorer initally read them on average compared to the actual ID when rechecked with a good sweep? ie: does the inital signal generally read higher then what the target actually is, lower than actual, or no set pattern? I'm just trying to get a feel for how the Explorer handles signals that it only gets a quick glimpse at with the faster sweep or when not centered well under the coil during a sweep.

First in all metal and ferrous all high pitched tones are generally to the right of the screen. That is where all the good metal comes in with the exception of rusted pop tops off old beer bottles for example. When swinging most of the signals you pick up in AM are iron/mineralized soil ETC. these signals in a moderately trashy area give a seemingly constant wave of low signals which I call iron drones. When passing over a better target the tone change is easily picked up by the ear not by any digital or crosshair location on the screen. Once you note this change in audio tone you automatically go back and investigate the target. Some signals are loud and clear and others are barely noticeable. If one was to use All Metal all the time these variations are easily picked up.
 
I saw the Folsom lake part - the town of Folsom and maybe some areas around where Mather AFB was looks like some nice grounds. I never tried those areas but wanted throw my thoughts for those areas.
I'll be going out this afternoon or evening. Waiting for the shop to open so I can get an electronic pinpointer and new headphones too. I'm taking the EX-II, my main machine, and I'm going to try the ACE 250 for the first time.

NH Bob is tuned to the Explorer and I sure enjoy reading the posts - of course along with the others too. Sometimes I think I got something about the machine down pat - then Bob puts it in a bit different perspective which cranks my thinking gears - a very helpful process. When it comes to detecting, if not doing it the next best thing is reading about it.
 
All I want to do is help others enjoy the most they can get from the Explorer. Sometimes I think I Ramble on too much and am afraid others will think I'm trying to be a know it all. That is not my intention. But I know I Ramble :heh:
 
I've heard a few blips that jump outside the normal Iron Blaat but going back over the spot I can't get it to repeat. What is your experience with those?
