A rare find in Virginia Beach

As a beach police officer, I'm extremely priveledged to be able to take a daily drive on the sand on my way to breakfast with my detecting buddies. This morning, at about 8AM, I almost ran over this guy sleeping on the beach. In 28 years of beach patrol, I've never seen a live harbor seal in the wild. I had the Va Marine Science guys come out and give him a clean bill of health; they said he probably came ashore to escape a shark. He reentered the water a few minutes after I found him, then came back ashore about 10 blocks south. As of 3PM, he was still sunning himself, surrounded by a half block of crime scene tape to keep tourists at a comfortable distance, and looking like he was waiting for a cabana boy to bring him a marguerita.

Thats awesome. Here in Florida we only see turtles (although thats still cool with me)...Thanks for sharing your find!

Thanks for the photo. It's nice to see what others see in their day to day lives.

A Very Kewl Find. I haven't seen a seal in the wild since I left Vancouver Island, they are fascinating animals.

Thanks for sharing that,

BDA:cool:

:thumbup:way too kool:clapping:thanks for sharing, nice to see a good story..

First we started getting more and mor harbor seals in Cape Cod. Now we have schools of Great White Sharks prowling along the beaches looking for a quick meal. This year our beaches were closed down all Labor Day Weekend due to the Great Whites close in. Enjoy the cute little fuzzy critter but keep looking over your shoulder as you wade . :sadwalk:

thats how it starts let one in then there goes the nieiborhood-there's a place in Calif-I think around S.F. that is loaded with seals -on everything .I seen a pics of it once-they were everywhere

[size=large]....I work at a Boardwalk Casino in Atlantic City as a Bicycle Patrol Officer and I found one that swam up on the beach in front one night in late April....He was just fine...the Mammal stranding center came out and gave him a clean bill of health and he eventually went back out to sea.
