As a beach police officer, I'm extremely priveledged to be able to take a daily drive on the sand on my way to breakfast with my detecting buddies. This morning, at about 8AM, I almost ran over this guy sleeping on the beach. In 28 years of beach patrol, I've never seen a live harbor seal in the wild. I had the Va Marine Science guys come out and give him a clean bill of health; they said he probably came ashore to escape a shark. He reentered the water a few minutes after I found him, then came back ashore about 10 blocks south. As of 3PM, he was still sunning himself, surrounded by a half block of crime scene tape to keep tourists at a comfortable distance, and looking like he was waiting for a cabana boy to bring him a marguerita.
