I was on my way to a house in my home town last weekend, and I happened to spy part of an old limestone sidewalk. The yard isn't in very good shape, so I called the owner Tuesday afternoon and asked for permission to hunt. I only had about two hours, so I started out next to the old sidewalk. I've found a few Indian head pennies on the lot west of this new house, so I was pretty sure I'd get some decent targets. The first really good, repeatable coin target I dug turned out to be a pocket watch lid about 10" deep. I haven't tried cleaning it too much, but I can see the name Adelphi Watch Co. on the inside. The next good target was hitting 12-46/12-47 really hard, but it was only showing about 4" or 5" down. I was so positive it was a clad quarter that when I had the hole opened up and the coin was on edge, I still saw it as a quarter. It wasn't until I bent over to pick it up that I realized it was a half. I was sure it was going to be a clad Kennedy because of the numbers, so I was shocked to see it was a 1944D Walking Liberty. The next good target was about 15 feet away, and it was a solid IH signal from the start. I was very happy to see the date of 1880 when I cleaned it up a little, as that is now my oldest penny. I can't wait to get back over there.
