Ace 150 vs Ace 250?

Hey there - I am planning to buy a MD. My first MD. I was wondering if the 150 and 250 are the same besides the extra pinpoint feature and various displays on the screen? Do they both have the same depth and accuracy? I will pretty much dig up anything that beeps so I am not too concerned with a fancy display. I will spend the extra money on a 250 if it can detect more metal than the 150.

Thanks for your two cents!

DEPTH ABOUT THE SAME................AND YOU WILL ONLY DIG EVER BEEP A FEW TIMES............THE 150 IS A GOOD DETECTOR,BUT IT WILL NOT SHOW YOU WHAT KIND OF COIN YOU HAVE DETECTED. IT WILL HAVE THE COIN ALERT BELL TONE,,,BUT YOU WILL HEAR THE COIN ALERT ON THINGS THAT ARE NOT COINS,,BUT THAT WILL HAPPEN ON THE 250 ALSO...........IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT...........BITE THE BULLET AND GET THE 250.........YOU WILL BE HAPPY YOU DID..............................danGeorge

Thanks for your input! Do you know if you can swap out the coils on the 150? Sorry for the stupid newbie questions. Everyone's been there once right?! I can't wait until I can post my finds!

In addition to what was already said, you will see much more about the 250 compared to the 150. The extra for the features and you see most most go for - the 250.
Also, should for any reason you sell it later on, most will bite for a 250.
Go for the 250 and you will appreciate what you get extra.
The 4.5 sniper coil can be a big help for trashy areas and when working in tot lots near metal.
The Pro Pointer is a very nice addition.
If you get headphones, be sure to get some with volume control. Otherwise your ears may bleed.

Hi tab - thanks for your input. Thats a great point about the reselling value. I live in Chicago so I have a feeling most places I MD in town will be pretty trashy. But at the same time I dont want to pass up a relic from the Worlds Fair or Columbian Exposition.

Is it worth buying the sport pack for the ace 250? I see it comes with a larger proformance coil. What is better about this coil?

Thanks in advance for your help!

They should both have about the same depth in theory, and both use the same coils.
Both detect the same range of conductivity, but the 250 "slices" that range into more
segments than the 150. So the ID can be a bit more accurate on the 250.
The 250 has 12 notches vs the 150's 5 notches. So the 250 has more ID resolution.
If you are digging everything, this may not be an issue.
The 150's depth indicator only reads to 6 inches, vs the 250's 8 inches.
But I don't know if the 250 actually detects any deeper or not. If it does, it's probably
not by much.
To me, the thing that really sets the 250 apart and makes it worth spending the
extra for is the pinpoint mode. You can tell almost exactly where the object is, vs it
being a little iffy one way or the other on the 150.
The machines normally run in a motion ID mode and that's not a very precise
way to pinpoint an object. Sure, you can still find them and dig them up, but it
will take a bit longer and you will likely dig bigger holes.
With the small sniper coil, this is not a big issue, but it can be on the stock coil,
and even more on the 9x12 coil.
But there is another advantage to having the 250 and it's pinpoint mode.
It gives you a true "non motion-all metal mode". This is where you constantly hear
the signals as you pass over the ground, vs only hearing the sporadic beeps when
in the normal motion ID mode. You have to keep the pinpoint button pushed in if
you want to use it like that.
Anyway, in your case, either one will do the job. But if money wasn't an issue I'd
spend the extra and get the 250. If nothing else, for the pinpoint mode.
But to answer your last question, either one is capable of finding the same metals
at about the same depths. It's just the 250 is easier and faster to use. And more
capable if you ever want to use the non motion mode.
I went with the 250, and glad I did now.. Not having the pinpoint mode would
drive me batty. That's my 29 cents worth anyway..
