Here are some thoughts from one who wished he had them 30 years ago when he started detecting.
1. Save all your copper, brass, etc in containers somewhere as they will eventually add up and be worth some cash.
2. Enter all good producing spots in a record for when you get better and can hit them again and dig what you missed.
3. When an opportunity opens for you to get in a good site - do it NOW. Dont wait till Sat or whenever. These places have a way of disappearing fast some times. Call in sick, give lame excuses to relatives, whatever it takes to get out there.
4. Keep some of your junkier finds as they are fun to go through and can be put in displays.
5. Make a few displays of finds and put them on the wall or wherever. Seeing them will encourage you to get out digging.
6. Have several irons in the fire - don't go to one place only as it may not be open that day. And research places well - if you don't others will.
7. When driving around town take different routes than usual - you might see a good site to detect.
8. Learn from other's experiences, don't be a know it all. There's just too many possibilities for someone to know them all.

10. Stick with a favorite detector - get to really know it. Otherwise you are starting all over again with a new one.
