Advice to beginners

Here are some thoughts from one who wished he had them 30 years ago when he started detecting.

1. Save all your copper, brass, etc in containers somewhere as they will eventually add up and be worth some cash.

2. Enter all good producing spots in a record for when you get better and can hit them again and dig what you missed.

3. When an opportunity opens for you to get in a good site - do it NOW. Dont wait till Sat or whenever. These places have a way of disappearing fast some times. Call in sick, give lame excuses to relatives, whatever it takes to get out there.

4. Keep some of your junkier finds as they are fun to go through and can be put in displays.

5. Make a few displays of finds and put them on the wall or wherever. Seeing them will encourage you to get out digging.

6. Have several irons in the fire - don't go to one place only as it may not be open that day. And research places well - if you don't others will.

7. When driving around town take different routes than usual - you might see a good site to detect.

8. Learn from other's experiences, don't be a know it all. There's just too many possibilities for someone to know them all.

9. Use low disc - dig more targets. You will get some junk but you will get an occasional goodie that you wouldn't have found.

10. Stick with a favorite detector - get to really know it. Otherwise you are starting all over again with a new one.

11. Write it down NOW each time you find a good looking spot to detect. Don't rely on memory. I always have a paper & pen handy.

12. Be open to new possibilities for digging/collecting things. Old signs, bottles, date nails, etc all can be fun.

13. After all's said & done - it's the fun as much as the finds.

Thanks for the info Steve. Being an fng all tidbits are appreciated and saved in the cyberspace of my mind sometimes to be retrieved by accident.

Thanks Steve! Those are all really good and reminds us to do that which we may have gotten lazy on and I'm glad I didn't have a Computer while I was doing most of my :detecting: , as I would have spent too much time on learning it instead of out finding the goodies! :)

God Bless & Good Luck to all! May the detectors meeting the ground Beep with good sounds of old coins, silver and gold! Takes patience, experience and liking the detecting hobby of collecting all kinds of Stuff! I have saved most of my junk after my ex turned in some before he left and rec money for the scrap metal! I have all kinds of metal......lead, iron, aluminum, steel, copper, brass and one for whatever metal it may be?

God Bless!
