You are confused because they want you to be. The "stock" coil on the E-Trac is called the Pro-coil. It's and 11 inch DD type coil. Smaller coils help "see" in between trash easier but lose some depth. They are best for trashy spots. Bigger coils can add more depth, but they are heavier and don't work as well in trashy spots where many targets will be under the coil at the same time.
There are 2 types of coil design. concentric and DD. Concentric coils are like a bullseye, and have a repsonse area that is shaped like an icecream cone going down into the ground. Concentric coils see deeper than DD coils, but that lst bit of depth is about the size of a quarter, so you have exactly centered to find it. DD coils are like two "D"s back to back. They have a response are like a blade going down the center. DD coils also have a very wide field around the edge so you have to stay a long way away from thing like metal poles. DD coils also have a huge advantage in coverage area. A 10 in concentric and a 10 inch DD coil both "see" 10 inch width of soil. The DD only sees it along the center, while the concentric sees it under the entire coil. Why does this help? Trash is the answer!
Aftermarket coils like SEF (sold only through KellyCo) are basically just a slightly different shaped coil. They don't do anything different, and side-by-side tests of same sized coils doesnt show that they do anything more than the factory coils. Doesn't mean they arent good, they just aren't "better".
