I easily made the decision that it would be a step backwards for me to bring on board the new machine at this time simply for two or three reasons

I left everything alone except for changing the sounds back and fourth... Put it into an open screen... Ran the Sens. up and down...
It's nice, it's just not for me right now....
I've got to have the tone variability in ferrous sounds.... I want a square nail to sound like iron.........

I'm in Washington state and I'm pretty sure our soils are pretty much the same. I have the XS and hunt in Conductive all the time. I like the scream of silver in my ears and yes, rusty nails can fool me from time to time. I did try Ferrous sounds once, but found it to be too noisy when my ears were use to the Conductive sounds. Some guys swear by Ferrous, but to me I think it's more for relic hunters and I'm sure it would take some time to catch on using Ferrous. You said that Charles helped you out. Just how long did it take you to figure out what Ferrous sounds were telling you and assuming that you used only Conductive in the past, have your finds been any better since going to Ferrous? Just curious. HH.

No, Eddie--
Right out of the shoot I used Ferrous Sounds and have ever since.... For me, it makes iron sound low and silver sound high... All most bell tone....
Square nails can still fool me when it's soppy wet out... But I have also been amazed at how crappy a deep silver coin can sound... Say in the 8 - 10 inch range...

Thanks JAB. I know what you mean about crappy sounds on deep silver. It's the same way with me in Conductive. To each his own I guess and when in doubt..............dig it..........
I have the Pro coil on my XS and I think it's going to work out fine. Had a couple of iffy signals and glad I ended up digging them. One was a merc and the other was a rosie. HH.

Some how I feel that you've not taken the time to PROPERLY set out your modes and invoke the right operational status 'BEFORE you go out to do your tests
Nails will give an iron sound if you set your E-trac up correctly..
You failed to mention that you did a 90 degree sweep as part of your test, and what the results were.
So why these comments? With your experience, you shouldn't be making such statements.
Please don't form opinions about the E-trac, based on primitive 'copy-cat' You-tube demos.
Be your own self and get it into real life situations, then make your judgements.............Best wishes ...MattR.UK.

I've never claimed to be a pro at anything and you can only do so much in two hours time... You know what I mean?
In no way am I trying to convince anybody to make any decisions based upon my decision for the present...
Metal detecting is my hobby, it's not my life... I am just sharing with you guys a non life threatening decision that was quickly and easily made for me and by me... That's all man...

Apart from a faster recovery speed, it's just another Explorer. Just a bit a fancy decorating. I passed it up and bought another detector. It offers no new information to help with working out what's under the coil.

I for one when the beach is out of the constant targets I move inland.
I noticed a weakness with the Explorer's for plowed/tilled soil. Due to the change in the ground matrix (airy soil).
I can and have done better under these conditions with much cheaper models.
So, these test do hold merit, and valued information for many...........
I for one have found a way I feel to make it work under these above mentioned conditions, but need the crops cleared from the fields.

Just being able to save the settings and knowing I could make sure before I left out hunting just interests me to no end.

Sorry if I appeared too critical, but I was disappointed in that you appeared to make a judgement of the E-trac based on such a demanding test, with no accurate account of real details of settings, and after only a couple of hours familiarisation.
Charles (NY) is indeed a good mentor, and I'm sure he would advise you of potential problem in setting up the E-trac that may have lead to your experiences of the coin-nail test.
Charles has been around the scene for many years, and has a wealth of knowledge to share.
One thing I should have made allowances for, before being critical, is not knowing details regarding the degree of mineralisation in your particular test spot.
Heavy mineralisation could make your observations valid.

I'm really kind of sorry I posted up my decision making process on the board... I would like you guys to understand that I was given a little less than 2 hours to make up my mind weather or not to purchase it or let the owner take it back to his shop. It's about a 5 hour drive east from here....
If I missed the train on this decision, it won't be the first time.... I'm sure I can always catch another soon...
