Here comes that question again--new machine, same question.----What with the enhanced BP & CL modes--how many of you guys are going to use coil covers??---Shall we use 'em or no??--With the 2 new modes being used, is there just that much more risk of mineralized dirt/sand getting inside the coil cover & "messin you up"---That 11" coil cover always was a royal pain in the bu-- to get off & clean.--I cracked about every one of them I ever tried to get off for cleaning & with those gaps on top, you've got to get them off for cleaning quite often.----What say ye??---How about spraying the bottom of the coil with a (non-metallic) pickup bedliner spray?--------Del

You know I just sold two mid range Whites units to get the new F75 ltd. Coils with covers sold also. I have determined that coil covers are waste of money. There are two classes of coils. New and used. People see used. Not used in good shape. And I have never beaten a coil to the point where a cover saved its life. Not to mention getting the bastards on & off. So there you have it. From a guy that just went through it on Ebay. Once you buy a coil the value drops. Once you muddy it up it drops some more. Covers are not worth the investment for resale value.
I'm going with out the cover on the LTD.
Switched to hunting with out covers on the beach detectors because of the black sand accumulation and noticed they aren't scratching up too much.
Lots of people on the beach and scuba forum use marine epoxy to coat the coils. I have not coated with anything yet.
I am moving that way with the dirt detectors too. I make an exception when using the FZ-12 coil I was lucky enough to get. The FZ-12 is hard to find; the coil cover is very light and so easy to take off and put back on so I use that cover so that I make sure I am preserving the coil's resale value (just in case I am ever foolish enough to get rid of the CZ's and accessories).

My take on cover
If you are buying a detector to try and then resell, then maybe a cover is in order. If you are a die in the woods person you should be able to buy a new coil if you wear it out, from all the finds you have dug. I had a buddy in Italy that hunted the water with a Garrett sea hunter Pulse,xl500. He would wear a coil out in about a year, but you should have seen all the Gold that he dug. I'm a relic hunter and really don't care for the cover or how much the coil gets beat up, I carry a spare everything when I'm out hunting, too far to go if something breaks. As for the age old argument that you are losing depth, or because dirt gets in the cover and give the machine troubles that's for others to argue BEST bet just forget the covers and just have fun finding what you are looking for or hope too.

Like you said, they get full of minerals (beach black sand is the worst)...then to get them off & clean them out they crack.
But, what I'm finding out with the new F75LTD is that I no longer need to "scrub" the ground to get after deep targets. If this continues to be the case, I won't be scratching up the coil at all........

I have gotten tired of late of cleaning covers, so I stopped using them. I am beginning to wonder if you can pick up static charge from the ground (like rubbing a balloon on your head). I remember reading a Bruce Candy article where it was mentioned the coil covers stopped ground static charge from building. The way I look at it is this: if I end up wearing a hole in the bottom of my coil detecting, which I seriously doubt, I'll just buy another coil, the heck with cleaning them each hunt. However, if ground static is interfering with my ability to run sensitivity higher, or can cause false signals, then I would want to use my covers and suffer to clean them. Does anyone know the answer?
because the first time I take it off it cracks in at least two places... next time two more places. I use a cover on the E-TRAC because it sort of clicks on and off easily. I mostly hunt in parks, woods, and lawns. If I hunted beaches or rocky places I might use a cover or a spray on. I've never damaged a coil but I reckon if I did I might figure something out.
They ought to make some sort of cover for the 11" F75 coil that just covers the middle and edge without all the ribs. Maybe then you could get it off without breaking it.

It works wonders on a coil.
Of course you need to clean the coil first. It will not remove scratches but it will make them look like new scratches! They say it protects too. I haven't thought about using it for that but I think i'll spray some coils I am using to see if it seems to help and make them easier to cleanup.
I bought the Glayzit to fix up some old All American 7 tube radios with the bakelite housing. It does that well too.

I'm not paying $20 for a piece of crap plastic. I sprayed mine with Krylon Clear Acrylic like I did with my other coils. The stuff works great. I agree whoever it was in this thread that if you are a die hard hunter and wear out the coil then hell, buy a new one.
I also cut out a piece of thin rubber material which is the same size of the coil and punched a few holes in it and used plastic cable wire ties to hold it on. Works great in the bean stubble and the coil just glides over now. If FT wanted to make a solid cover for the 11 IN coil, that would certainly make more sense to me!

I don't see WHY Fisher doesn't make a solid coil cover for the 11" DD for the relic hunters & have it over and done with (for anyone that wants a coil cover).---In the past (last year) I've coated a couple of the bottoms of my coils with a GOOD pickup bedliner and it's worked out well--think I'm going to do a couple more.---It isn't bad when you can get the covers off fairly easily for cleaning but I'm not about to pay 20 bucks a shot for covers that you can't even "wiggle" a little bit trying to get the things off without cracking them about every time.---I even snapped a brand new cover on my wife's 11" coil and I was handleing it with "kid gloves".----Just my thoughts on the subject.--------Del
