Well I have gotten permission recently to hunt a very old and very large farm. House is dated 1760 and I believe the property was used even earlier. I have been finding the usual clad all around and also the usual junk. Then I started getting some wheaties from the teens and 20's. I have been to this place 3 times at this point and it was all I have been able to find. Well figured I would give it another go and out of nowhere pops a beautiful 1916 barber dime from 6-7 inches deep with a textbook 12-44 signal.:surprised: What a beautiful sound silver makes huh!! Well atleast this coin made me realize it was worth another go. So the next weekend I go back. I see the owner and ask him if a piece of the property was his or if it were the neighbors because to me it looked like the adjoining land. He then told me he owns right up to there front porch.:super: So off I go swinging away and get 12-45 saying about 10 inches on the depth gauge!! No sweet tone this time so I figured was a quarter that has some fill over it. Dig out a nice big plug and out pops a green disc. Hmmm I say to myself, looks like a knockout for an electric box. So I put it in my finds pouch and continue on. About 5 minutes later another 12-45 around the same depth. This time it ends up a beautiful 1817 lc 15 star variety . Now I'm really excited about this place. So I continue on.... 5 more minutes another 12-45 also around the same depth and out pops another green disc.
Now these green discs have me a little curious 2 of them not 50 feet from one another. Well its now getting dark so off to the car I go. I'm putting everything away when I notice what looks to be an outline of a head on one of the green discs. Now my eyes are bugging out of my head. I now realize that both of these green discs are not green discs after all but rather early copper coins. I felt like I was dreaming. Come on now 3 coppers in a matter of 15 minutes, no way:shrug: What a beautiful patina these 2 coppers have. And also my oldest coins to date. The first one You cannot read anything on but I know it is from the 1700's. The second one you can see a figure sitting on what looks like is a chariot and on the other side is a head facing left. date says 17??. I have looked throughout the redbook and the closest coin in comparison is either a Connecticut copper or a Vermont copper. It is very hard to make out the inscriptions but if anyone has any ideas about cleaning it would be much appreciated. Unfortunately the second coin has a pretty bad bend in it. Sorry if the pics are real sloppy.
Without even saying now you guys must have figure that I'm very excited about going back to this place right. Well your right. The next day I return and start hitting the same area again and there is next to no signals at all. :sadwalk: But I was able to pull out some clad, a few wheats and a junk ring which was actually about 9 inches deep, not to mention the normal bits of junk. Disappointed now, I move on to the next spot on the property which is down by where a smaller creek meets a large creek. This is where I was told allot of picnicking took place years ago. Also many a people walk through this property to fish because it borders about a mile of the creek. within a few minutes I dig a few wheaties. Then under a large shade tree I receive a 12-46 signal about 3-4 inches deep. I'm definitely figuring quarter now right. Well something looked a little off about this quarter. Yeah it looked like a lc only half the size and I said to myself no frigging way I think I have a half cent. Sure enough it is a 1828 half cent 13 star variety. I am still in disbelief. After that just a bunch more clad and a merc that was pretty deep and slightly on edge.
Cant wait to get back to this place, but unfortunately I have 3 more places that I've gotten permission to go. One is a 1844 farm house, another is a building that is being used as a restaurant now but was built around 1800, and a mid 1700's colonial with a really promising lawn. What to do??:help::shrug::biggrin:

Sorry bout the coins, wish I could do better but have no macro and the scanner is not working That is the best I could do with my amateur knowledge and cheesy camera unless any suggestions.

Super finds!!

Wow fantastic finds, sounds like you got a problem figuring out where to go!
Narrow it down to two and flip a quarter!

Yeah its a dilemma alright. One things for sure, I'm going to think about bringing some video next time no matter where it is.

I cannot begin tell you how fun it is (and a little more work) to re-live the moment when you pulled out those coins. Especially those with a lot of history to them. I've really enjoyed watching and sharing my videos.

Take care and keep hunting.

Wow! VERY nice haul!! That's why we hunt!! Congrats!!

As for the photos, do you have a magnifying glass? Might try putting it in front of the camera lens and seeing what happens!!

I wish I had your problem of not knowing which old location to go to next.

Great coins and thanks for the story.

Thanks for all the responses, hunting that old farm is truly alot of fun, and the owners are some of the greatest people I know. I really haven't even touched a tenth of the property yet, and now I'm sure there is a bunch more, just wish I had more time. HH Joe

Did your coin look anything like this? I found one in very rough shape and described it exactly as you did, " sitting on a chariot", mine was 184? and I dont know if it is a penny, dollar, etc, but it is British (hence Britania sitting with the shield). The one pictured is not mine, of course- mine was hardly visible, when you'd wet it with water. On another note Im have been searching a similar site (1780s). I kid you not was the last hit I dug for the day, and having never found something older there, was about to give up on the site. That hit was a large cent under a huge slab.Using another brand of detector. CO

Now that's some mighty fine diggin' territory. Thank you for posting the story and the pictures. I hope you find a dozen more.
I ran accross a field like that. 15 old colonials andd coppers, Reales, 3 US silver coins, lots of great buttons and broaches. All in a small area.
Keep on swingin' there. Go in differnet directions, slow down, grid it off. You will come accross more and more. Congratulations.

I appreciate your input although I dont think that is the coin. The "chariot" is facing the opposite direction. The redbook has several coins with with a similar design on them, but just too hard to pick out which one it is. Thanks for the response, HH Joe
