Almost silver.....the results of today's water hunt...

Pete in MI

New member
Got out for a couple hours...had lots of sightseers and guess I was the sight. I got out into the water and determined I was way too overdressed...the water wasn't as cold as I had expected so the thermal underlining beneath the blue jeans and shirt under the chest waders and vest made me roast.

Not being used to this machine and trying to use suggestions from others I was hoping for 'coins and jewelry only'.

Here is the haul....is it just coins and jewelry???

I did score some coins...almost silver 1965 Dime, 2004 Dime, 1996 D Nickel, a Memorial Penny and one I couldn't read. I did score a couple Wheaties....
A 1936 Wheat

And the best of all - check out this date!!!!

Yeah!!!! A 1919 S Wheat penny (this worth anything???)

I did get an assortment of fired shell casings...not sure who was shooting at what...shotgun shells for ducks I can understand.
Got a couple sinkers for fishing. Pull tabs and nails and huge hunks of iron. There is like a little lantern (maybe a game piece?) looking thing...

Anyone ever see something like this before?

Well that float/sieve rocked!!!:super: And glad I put the water on there to drink, I sure needed it. (It also makes a nice hidey hole for small items that might fall through the sieve - or valuables you don't want others to see).

Oh yeah there was also a button for a contestant in the Annual Tip Up Town ice fishing contest....1995! And in pretty good shape for being in the water as long as it has been.

Here you see a Double Seater Privy doing double duty as an ice fishing shanty.

Well I think that covers the finds...oh yeah the sieve kept gathering more and more stones and rocks...the small stones I brought home for Sherry's rock tumbler. Not a bad floating sieve for the cost.
Can't wait to get out again.

Oh yeah someone mentioned that this used to be the largest and most popular beach (and had a restaurant near it) until a new one was built further down the road. There is more than enough room for several hunters....average water depth is only 4 feet for quite a ways out...the control box never got wet as I had it hip mounted on a sling.

Someplace on my harddrive is a pic of this beach area around the 50s.

Hope your day was as much fun as mine.

Glad you got some keepers! I was wondering how you was going to dump out the rocks with the flag and water bottle on it!

Last year, before I moved out of Michigan and back home to Oklahoma, I hit the old "Dutchtown" swimming area in Albion. I got a lot of Wheat's out of there, and a few pieces of jewelry. Two silver coins. Lots and Lots of sinkers. Some fired hollow-point bullets. I'm assuming the fired bullets, and your shell casings, are from somebody tossing a bottle out into the water and shooting it for target practice.

I could have tipped it over and got rid of the rocks and stone...but since I left a lot of the finds in the bottom with the stones I had to wait to get home to be sure I wouldn't lose any good stuff.

Next time I will put trash in the large pouch attached to my leg and probaby use the water bottle container to hid the goodies from prying eye.

Oh yeah and the very center on the bottom is that solid rectangle of plastic which only held the dirt...going to drill some holes there to help that drain as well.

(Oh yeah and I have someone on another forum not happy I used the divers flag) sheesh...is there a flag that say run me over that he would be happy with?

think I remember seeing your posts before...you haled from around Warren/Detroit area before didn't ya?

How's the OK state treating ya?

You are right it is addicting. I'd have stayed out longer but just couldn't stand being so hot from all the gear I was wearing. Supposed to rain and thunderstorm today or I'd go out again later today. (Don't mind the rain..not into water and electricity..in fact not into electricity...I generate too much static electricity hence the avatar..I get ZAPPPPPPPPED too many times a day.

Hope to see ya here more often Allen and praying all goes well for you and the family.

We're doing good here. I've made a few good land finds, but haven't gotten into the water. I have to drive farther to find a beach down here, and with the price of gas, I might not do much water hunting this year. I need to do some research and start looking for local swimming holes, as the swimming beaches on the lakes are pounded.

I moved from Lansing a little over a year ago. Glad things are going well. Michigan isn't getting any better.

are you the same guy who came to Plainwell one nite for a detecting meeting? Either way welcome! :)

Ya can't please them all!

..I never knew Houghton Lake had a beach-Ya say it can hold more than 1???May I join ya some day???I will be up West Branch way in a few weeks...

We moved back here to OK last October. It got to expensive to live up there.

You all have a nice club up there. I wish I could have joined, but couldn't really make any meetings, nor afford the gas to go to them. I've re-joined my club down here, and I'm doing well. I even eyeballed a good 14K gold ring at an empty lot back in Feb.

Even though I'm a cook, in a service industry, I feel the effects of the economy. My old boss at the country club up there got word to me that they've been really slow this Spring, the state prison shut down, and at least one other business moved out. Even the full-time employees aren't getting they hours they should be getting.

good start to the season pete. after a couple of hunts you'll have the bugs worked out and will be used to it then you'll forget its there 1/2 the time.

Actually there are 2 small beaches for 2 different townships. One is at Houghton Lake (Roscommon Township)and the other is at Prudenville (Denton Township)- behind the Pressure Crack Bar on M-55.

The one for Roscommon Township I have never seen anyone swimming at or even at...it has a small playground that gets hit by several detectorists in this area.

The other in Denton Township I have seen only a few people at and none were swimming...just sunning themselves on the beach.

There may be others I am not aware of but the one I speak of used to have a restaurant on the end of a dead end road. There is a cement retaining wall - with steps where the restaurant used to be. On the opposite side of the little street is a grassy area and it too has a cenment retaining wall. The whole area was used for swimmers but made accommodations for launching their boats and probably parking them at the restaurant side so people could 'boat up' and go in to eat. I had a photo of the place...or maybe a couple from around the 50s.

Will have to see if I can post them for you to see. So this place is my secret for now....even though many know of it only I as far as I know detect there.

There is more than enough room for more than a couple guys with water machines to have fun. That area has a 1 to 4 foot depth. ANd stays about 4 feet out into the lake quite aways...making for one BIG swimming and playing area for old time swimmers and kids and Moms and Dads to relax and lose stuff.

Will be glad to take you there to detect...and will take anyone else who wants to get wet to detect there too.
