Aluminum shafts for water detectors?

I just bought a surf DF and am looking to upgrade the shaft to a straight shaft. The original was an S shaft and all the paint had corroded off of it!
I have a surf pi pro as well with a kind of crummy looking shaft. Is this corrosion because the previous owners did not wash their detector or just comes with using aluminum?
I've never used a DF. I'm thinking it may be a good detector to bring on vacations - perhaps with one of the 3 piece shaft kits on the market.

Aluminum blisters naturally...... especially inside causing them to LOCK UP easier. Since the shaft moves with the coil the shaft isnt really affect by the metal....... UNLESS you use a lower shaft shorter than 24"..... then it could cause a dead spot in the coil. We used to use SS coil bolts even. My suggestion....... CF, its the only way to go now days.

I just built one for my equinox CF works great!
