Who has to carry their E-Trac in one hand and a gun in the other in order to go to the oldest parts of town?

Not really, but that's what I think it would take to hunt some of those areas.

if a park was dangerous enough you needed a gun for protection, I would even go there, sorry but no old coin is worth my life!

If you get permission and the area is that bad do what you have to do if you desire to hunt there. I'm sure you are honest and of the highest integrity or you would'nt be a detectorist. So get a handgun carry permit and carry while you hunt these areas. Inform the police where you would like to hunt and they will advise you of the risks just remember most thugs carry also. Good luck! :minelab:

The oldest park in Utah is called pionner park. I hunted it twice but will not go there again unless I have some big dudes to hunt with me as it is a crack smokin, dope sellin. fight pissen, money beggin hang out. they try to keep it clean but you just might stick your finger with a needle when you dig and you also just might dig up somebodys burried stash of drugs as the dealers bury it now when they sit by the trees. It has lots of history (for utah) and would be fun to give a shot but I got lots of places to be that arent risky and dont wast my time getting keeping away from trouble.

Ha Ha, not in my hand but in my pocket since I have a CCW permit. Most of our areas are not bad but since I carry everywhere I do detecting too.

I got my certification, now I just have to send off for the liscence itself... better safe than sorry and its our constitutional right to protect you and yours... be careful and Happy swingin!

Pioneer Park has been safe for the last several years.. it has dedicated patrols and they dont let the homeless stay there anymore. they made a big push to clean up that park and it is beautiful. I go there several times a month and havent had any problems other than the police will ride up and ask a few questions and maybe want to see your ID..I do carry my gun with me but hell...i carry it when im at the mall...I wouldnt be too worried about hunting there..especially after the farmers market on saturday.

I have a friend in Alaska, who has a really good point. When you are in Bear Country, you ALWAYS have the ability to STOP the bear. PERIOD.

That is not even my point. When I detect, I have wasp killer with me, in a small can. Shoots 20 feet or so, and a lot cheaper than mace. I also carry a digger that is pointer. I carry a 3 foot shover that is sharpened.

Most importantly, I also carry a Mod 17 Glock, or my Bond Arms .45/.410 derringer, which I just love.

THAT is not even my point......here is my point you should consider........DON'T just get a concealed carry permit and think that is enough. To STOP the bear, you must hit the bear. In detecting terms, think about how you are vulnerable. You wear earphones most likely. You are bent over a LOT. An easy target in the right neighborhood. Be AWARE of your surroundings. Hunt with a buddy. Most importantly, take some combat shooting courses. Shoot from different positions, squatting down, lying on your back, your stomach. Offhand shooting/reloading. Practice. Practice. Practice. You will play as you practice.

OK, TIA.....(that is all)

Dennis, loaded for bear....

I have my cc and don't go anywhere without mine. I haven't found anyplace that is absolutely safe to be or hunt.

i am so sorry to read what lengths you guys have to go to to stay safe my mouth is gapped open never really thought about you staying safe whilst doing such an innocent hobby how sad i hope you all keep away from any troubled areas happy hunting guys

Geez guys
If it's that bad just don't go. I have a carry but guns and detecting just don't go together.

I like to carry and hunt without headphones got 4 coyotes and one raccoon last year usually within the first 5 minutes of detecting and thats not counting all of the ones I missed I do not know what the critters think the tones are but they come a running.

Coolhandluke, no what you mean!!! I was hunting in a somewhat dangerous looking area where an old park stood (not a real good part town). Two strange looking characters walked up and ask what I was doing, I told them I was working for the city police and was just goofing off before they got there. They didn't say another word and just left. I left shortly after that myself. I hunt with sharp Lesch and a 31 inch Predator tool, they could make a pair of pretty good weapons if need be. I'm going to hunt in a safer area from now on.

There are some bad areas that draw many of us due to the history which exist in changing neighborhoods.
In fact our club had a mystery coin buried in one of these areas and we retrieved it after several attempts.
When confronted with the need to detect in a questionable area we never go alone
and we go very very early in the morning.
There has been talk of getting vests the color of city workers that would make us look more official
and we are seriously considering getting those bright orange vests.
If all else fails, we can say we are looking for dead people.

Good luck and be safe.

I usually carry with me too. Mosty a small .380 in back pocket or sometimes my Smith&Wesson M&P9c on my hip.

Danger is everywhere, even in the "safe" parts of town. But, I normally will stay away from the rougher places if I am by myself. There is safety in numbers.

Unfortunately what hershey1 says is only to true, these thugs are not concerned about gun laws or permits. If they want a weapon they will have it.The only person that gun laws effect are the honest ones.

I know a fella in East St Louis IL that came up with a solution to hunting the parks in that city. He bought a specially trained police dog that he takes with him any time he goes. The dog will not let anybody with in 10 ft. of him with out raising all kinds of noise alerting the guy some one is approaching him. He says it is the only way he feels safe hunting those areas as many of the parks have really bad reputations for muggings. Unfortunately Illinois has no concealed weapons rights. Rick: IL

Unfortunately that is how it is these days. Its not as much a matter of putting yourself out there in a problem area, as it is anyone can get assaulted or robbed if they can't protect themselves. The "If it's that bad just don't go" don't cut it..... It is a time now when no one is safe almost anywhere unless you have full time security patrolling where you are or can protect yourself. My gun is my last resort after I have exhausted anything else I have, but that depends on the odds. I have detected in area that murders have happened on the same ground, there is a lot and I mean a lot of things that never make it to the TV news or papers. I worked EMS for 23 years and in that time was hundreds of crimes that no one ever knew happened. I was there and seen a war zone here in good old WV and being so far out away from law enforcement we were allowed to carry "concealed of course with permit" and I did and was on many occasions had "peace of mind" knowing if things got to a point I could change the outcome. I have been face to face with murders that you would have give money too or give a ride. That unless you seen what they did to another person would have thought they were a fine looking clean cut fellow. Bad people don't all look like bad guys or look dirty, and could fool you quicker than you know. Like I posted earlier, my "peace of mind" is always close by but always out of sight.

Happy Hunting and Be safe
Rick
